Marcel Brands was infinitely worse as a DOF than Thelwell
Thelwell hasn’t had anyone meddling and he still signed Beto and Maupay.

If that's not a career-killer wait til he brings in Rondon last minute on deadline day...Thelwell hasn’t had anyone meddling and he still signed Beto and Maupay.
Not true if you believe the BobbleThelwell hasn’t had anyone meddling and he still signed Beto and Maupay.
Look far another job?Kev woke up this morning knowing he had to do something today, but he can’t quite remember what.
We could replace him with an inflatable and notice zero differenceMaybe we can replace him with DeepSeek? They suggest we buy Ndivia to combine with Ndiaye
The loans we should be looking at are players who are not the right fit for a new managers style of play recruited before they arrived.
These players must fit, involved in match day squads all season and not have a long list of
Injuries and personal issues.
They must be under 25 years of age.
The reason for selling / loaning must be one of reluctantly cutting costs when no longer involved in say a European campaign for example.
They must fit our manager's style of play and have ambition.
Finding these will be difficult but not impossible.
Don't waste money on half-arsed, crocked journeymen.
I think for comparison, we don't talk enough about previous DOFs.
For example, Marcel Brands:
Spent 30 million on a permacrock centre-back who could barely be arsed to play for us, on 120K pw
Spent 27.5 million on Moise Kean,
Spent 25 million on Andre Gomes, on more than 100K pw
Spent 25 million on Gbamin, on 75K pw
Spent 9.5 million on renowned permacrock Fabian Delph, on 92K pw.....NINETY-TWO THOUSAND POUNDS PER WEEK
Spent 27.5 million on Ben Godfrey, on 76K pw
Spent 24.6 million on the 29 year-old Allan whose legs were already going, on 70K pw
Paid money for Josh King
Paid money for Demarai Gray
Signed no marks like Andros Townsend and Salomon Rondon on free transfers
In 2020 he offered Michael Keane a 5-year contract on 80K pw
He put David Unsworth in charge of our youth academy whilst he was also U21 manager
In the summer of 2019 his architectural squad planning, despite vast expenditure, left us with 3 senior centre-backs, 2 of whom were Michael Keane and Mason Holgate. The other was the above-mentioned permacrock who only played when he was arsed. The central midfielders he left us with that summer were Schneiderlin, Gbamin, Delph, Tom Davies and Andre Gomes
And then there's Walsh who it's not even worth bothering starting with.
No wonder we were on the verge of financial ruin and up to our eyeballs in PSR charges
What was he needed for ?
Why not include loans as well ? Harrison is definitely a poor signing as could be argued Broja when everybody knew he had glass legs before he signed
To be fair I can’t criticise him too much I think he’s given a reasonable account of himself in the circumstances.
Beto is the one that’s glaring even despite our constraints though. Simply not at the level.
I love it when people say this about Thelwell…
All good signings? then why are we still absolutely garbage eh.
A total buffoon!Spot on, every single word. Thelwell has had some job getting rid of many of the above and adding to the team with very little wiggle-room.
Signings like Maupay will always be a black mark on Thelwell, but history will be kind to him imo.
We could always loan oh we can't thanks to Thelwell & Dyche - two crap loans !Free low cost backup keeper.
Because loans are stop gaps or players to take a try before you buy. Look at how bad some of Moyes' loans were for us...
Hard to tell based on the numbers he delivered in Italy -- many a boss has failed signing from Serie A.
See Scamacca, who i thought would be a big hit.
I would guess thats because theyre good signings and not a conveyor belt of superstars...because of the financial constraints
