He could well be very poor at the role of DOF and I'm not convinced at all he should be in the role. But after the way the club has been ran, I am assuming that he is not being given the backing he needs in any case.

I find it hard to believe he doesn't have a list of players ready but don't forget all of our transfer business has to go through blue Bill due to his 'extensive transfer acumen' and experience in the market.

The first thing we need to assess with Cannon is whether the Manager thinks he could be a useful asset. Much better he works with this Manager and coaches and train daily with top flight professionals than go on loan. Not many Academy loanees go on to play 50 games for Everton, I really hope the Manager likes him enough to keep him here.

They'll get more than on our bench.

The hit rate of quality in academy players that went on loan and then played 50 times afterwards for Everton looks a bit like...

Osman, Barkley, Gordon, Kenny (loaned)
Hibbert, Anichebe, Davies, Rodwell (no loans).

We can rule Rooney out as being the anomaly.

The only reason we're getting money for Simms is purely due to his loans.

Done correctly it's a better tool than not playing in the premiership.IMO

I think if we sent him back to Preston that's as near as we will get to guaranteed playing time. I understand what your saying but if we get some forward players in (big if, obvs) I wouldn't be opposed to him going back to Preston. It's a good league, he was getting a lot of playing time and scoring goals, it'll be good for his confidence and, hopefully, we might be in a better position to integrate him in the team in a years time (as hopefully our financial situation might not be so dire and we won't necessarily be fighting relegation from the first match). Lots of ifs, buts and maybes there, I know, but we are not in a normal situation, unfortunately.

You’re forgetting one key thing here, Brighton don’t have a lying scumbag for a chairman and a clueless dipshit for an owner who both overtake things from DoFs

I honestly think there is no-one at the club that knows what a good DOF is
They hired a Scout as one in Walsh
They hired a DOF in Brands but thought he shouldn't be doing what a DOF does

I think it’s easier at Brighton as they have a style of play that a target player can fit into. I agree we should have cheaper, younger, higher potential targets lined up, I just think it is probably easier for Brighton as they have really shopped in that market ever since they sacked Hughton, and It’s easier for a player to fit a pattern of play than into our ‘mixed’ style
