Funny that because I could have sworn that Jermain Defoe scored a couple for England this week, how tall's he? Maradona didn't do bad for a short bloke. Don't think Pele was that big either and defenders were far more brutal in those days. Tevez is only 5'6" and hasn't had a bad career. Romario likewise was only small and had an incredible career.

You say that these players are great, which surely just proves that if you're good enough then you're tall enough. It's this constant desire for big players with good 'engines' that has seen English football fall into the dark ages.
 
I agree with that really but you can't have too many short/lightweight players in the team at the same time, thats why Baines hardly played last season, remember Arsenal a couple of years ago, excellent football but if you played the physical game with them you could take them apart, as proved so many times by Bolton

All the players mentioned have been given time to develop technically and physically. They also haven't just turned 16. If you had read my post you'd have seen that I quite clearly said "Baxter will make it" if he is given time.

At this moment in time he is not ready. He's not physically up to it nor does have have the experience. If you've watched him you will have seen he's quite a slight lad and not the strongest. Players like Tevez, Maradona, Rooney etc are of average height but they where built like bulls. Physically they where immense at around 16-18 and could come in and cope.

Not being stocky or well built Jose will need time. He's not even a regular for the reserves yet which pretty much proves he's nowhere near ready for the first team.
 
stocky for sure. but maradona average height? perhaps for the willy wonka workforce.

michael owen took the world by storm at 17 and he was very slight. having never seen baxter in the flesh i imagine him to be played in a dead rubber uefa group match much like rodwell last season. or the last 10 minutes in an end of season home match when er are 3 or 4 goals up like vaughan.

time will tell i guess.

In the forward its all about your movement. For me it all depends if he relies on his pace, his power or making that extra space for himself, like say andy cole and linekar used to, i cant really comment because i havnt seen him play.

Has to be said though, it can be frustrating sometimes seeing Ossie and AJ being muscled of the the ball. Did anyone else ever think what a player Ossie would be if he a little stronger and bigger, probably world class.

If Osman had pace and strength he probably would be world class. He was one of the top talents in his age group as a kid, better than Joe Cole but injuries really hampered his devlopement.

He was never rapid but he was definatly quicker than he is now. The cruciate injury definatly took a yard of him. He was a striker coming through the academy and youth teams. He even played there for the reserves.
 
we lost a young talent to fulham a couple of years back. anyone remember who he was? did he do anything or is he still too young to play?

Yeah Sean Doherthy was his name he did [Poor language removed] he was released from Fulham, and spent half a season with Da Hauge, was released by them not sure where he is now.

He was a real Rad when he left moving to a "bigger club" in Fulham ****!

Sean Doherty (born 10 February 1985, in Basingstoke) is an English footballer who plays as a left midfielder for Sligo Rovers.
Doherty started his career at Everton's youth academy before controversially moving to Fulham which was reported in press that the transfer was £600,000. The fall out from this transfer saw his father leave the Everton academy coaching staff. After failing to make the breakthrough to the Fulham first-team squad, he joined Dutch Eredivisie club ADO Den Haag on a free transfer.
In January 2006 Doherty returned to England with Port Vale on a short-term contract but failed to impress and was allowed to leave at the end of the 2005/2006 season.
Doherty signed for Accrington Stanley in May 2006, but was released a year later.

He signed for Southport F.C from Accrington on a 3 month loan deal but failed to impress only making 7 appearances in 3 months.
Doherty signed a 1 year deal at Royal Antwerp.
On the 18 January 2008, Sean Doherty was unveiled as a Sligo Rovers player, a team that plays in the Eircom League of Ireland Premier Division.

He has been capped 7 times by England at youth level.

Bet his old man is made up for him!
