Liverpool’s St George’s Hall played host to the 12th annual Everton Youth Academy awards on Thursday evening.
The Club’s second prestigious awards ceremony of the week was attended by the Blues’ young talents and their families to celebrate their achievements and progression during the 2009/10 season.
After winning Academy Player of the Year at Tuesday’s senior awards, Under-18 goalkeeper Adam Davies picked up his second award of the week, winning Player of the Season for his age group.
But the big winner on the night was Jose Baxter, who collected the prestigious Keith Tamlin Award in recognition of his impact on the field as well as his contribution to Academy life as a whole.
The 18-year-old striker has made more than 10 appearances for the first team and become a regular member of David Moyes’ squad since making his debut for the senior side at just 16.
Understandably, Baxter was delighted with his achievement.
“I feel honoured,” Baxter told evertontv. “It’s a great award to win. I just felt privileged when my name was read out to go and collect the award.
“I just want to get more minutes under my belt and stay in and around the first team. And if things don’t work out, I’d hopefully like to get out on loan and get some games under my belt.
“I’ve learnt you have to get there through hard work, and get your head down and do as best as you can in training, off the pitch. Hopefully that will lead to bigger and better things.”
The striker also recalled fond memories when he was in the front row as a budding youngster looking up to his Everton idols.
“I remember sitting there, biting my nails hoping that I would get player of the year! Just looking around now and seeing the young kids is great and remembering one day that was me.
“When I was in there position I was looking up to players like Leon Osman, Tony Hibbert and Wayne Rooney, and for them to now be looking up to me, I’m so honoured.”
The final speech of the evening was given by Academy Manager Ray Hall. He paid tribute to all staff and players, highlighting their outstanding commitment and dedication to the Everton Academy. He also challenged Baxter to replicate Jack Rodwell’s achievements at the Club as he continues to become a regular member of the first team squad.
He said: “I think Jose is one of those players which Academies are set up for. He’s a local player, who came to us at a very early age with talent, and we provide the avenue for him to as high as he wants to go.
“He’s probably got the biggest challenge of his football life now, because he’s nearly there. And I think the next step for Jose is the biggest one. He has to move from being outstanding prospect and an outstanding young man, to move into an environment where there are world-class players.
“I believe he’s got the mental strength, the ability and the support to get him there.”
Will he make it? Wonder will he and Duffy get a run Sunday?
