Generally I agree with your 2nd paragraph although I think you're being a bit generous with the description. My own impression is that when he goes outside his expertise he shows himself to be a weird, angry crank.

Yeah, was deliberately trying to be generous. The 2nd paragraph is thinking more about his style, than his content. That vague, obfuscating way of engaging with issues, that he seems to employ just winds me up, more so than the content itself.

I tried to explain how people like him work once, tried to explain it like a game of golf. Imagine it’s raining and you hit a ball, common sense should tell you grass is slippy AF when it’s wet, run on it, try and stop and you’ll slide. But anyone who’s played golf will know wet grass slows your ball down. That logic makes sense, makes you question what you think is right. By that right your ball should travel further in wet grass. That’s how people get on board with idiots, in their heads what they’re saying makes sense. Have some brains about you and realise it’s down to physics and the mass of a person versus the mass of a golf ball and you understand why the two behave differently.

I read that in Larry's voice. I half expected a black swan to feature on the golf analogy.

I enjoy reading the likes of David Harvey but wouldn’t pay much attention if he started handing out relationship advice.
Peterson has cornered the lonely angry man market and is lapped up by people who don’t really understand academia or critical analysis.

Oh honestly mate, know of some horror stories of Academics suffering badly after public engagement activities and getting serious flak. I get the argument that public money funds academia and research so there should be a benefit to wider society etc. but I'm not so sure many are prepared for the crap that comes with it.

Fundamentally I don't think much of the public deserve or have the capacity to critically engage with high quality research. It's wasted on them and does more harm than good. Unfortunately the worst culprits are the ones who think they can.

Got several academic mates who have had multiple papers published and a couple are becoming very well known in their fields.
Would be totally insane if they just went AWOL and started acting as an voice of authority on all sorts of subjects. lol

Same here. Although I do encourage my mate who's an expert in metallurgy to express his thoughts on gender norms and mental health on Twitter.

This is very true. I think a few people work in academia on here so not sure if they experience the same but get told repeatedly that they have a regular existential crises as their work is generally unacknowledged outside of academic circles or is generally ignored depending on the government of the time.

Extremely difficult to get traction in Government, particularly if you aren't saying something they particularly like.

i'd say there is a chance that he is being propped up by some money/people in and around certain parts of the media; but his fans are so well versed in knowing how MSM and the like works, that he would have been found out by now

i don't think he believes or even knows half the stuff he is going on about
