Anyone think Mikel’s worth having a go at?

He’s certainly fits the bill in my opinion. Agressive, good on the ball, good passer and has a nasty streak about him which we lack in my opinion. Moyes is obviously looking for a tall midfielder and Mikel again fits that description. He’s around 6ft 3 and can tackle and mix it physically.

I’m expecting people to say no, he’s out of our range but I disagree. Chelsea have just bought a right back (Bosingwa) so Essien will be playing centre midfield next season. With Lampard and Ballack in there aswell Mikel will be a squad player at best. We’d probably have to pay around 12 million for him but I’d say he’s worth it.

Him and Fernandes in the middle has a good look to it in my opinion.

Sign him up.

First one with the hypothetical team line up gets a beachball signed by that hot spunk from Neighbors.

What is this lads wages would be the next question? Surely he'll not want to take a massive pay cut coming to us...

I can't see him even contemplating Everton at this time. The guy had Chelsea and Man Utd scrapping over him for months so probably views himself a cut above the likes of us.

If we are going to attempt to sign any Chelsea players then, money permitting, I think we should get in with a bid for Anelka as soon as possible. I think he'll be surplus to their requirements next season. He would fit in at Goodison so very well.

Theres only one person richer than Anelka, and thats his Agent.

I think he'd be interested in joining us. Where an up and coming club and whilst he is an excellent player he's not quite cut out for Man utd or Chelsea.

Obviously he'd have to drop down in wages a bit but I doubt he's on a scary amount. He's not a key player there and was bought as one for the future. He's also a squad player and has three or four midfelders ahead of him.

Plus we have Yakubu, Yobo and Anichebe who he knows well. Maybe he'd be interested in joining up with them.

If we want to move to that next level then we need a proven midfielder who is going to produce the goods. Every time I see Mikel he's quality and he seems to fit the bill for what Moyes is looking for.

Anyway, he's just a suggestion and I don't think he's that unrealistic either.

I usually agree with your posts, TB. But on this one I have to differ. For a start, I don't see him as a Moyes type player. Maybe in a couple of years when he matures a bit, he will have the necessary Moyes attributes. But at this time he strikes me as a little immature and still very impressionable.

I see what you mean but what is an Everton type player?

I think alot of people would say the same about Yakubu or Fernandes yet I think both have fitted into our team reasonably well.

Mikel seems to have a nasty streak about him but in think we lack that as a team. We have too many nice players in my opinion.

I think with Yak the problem might be that he doesn't really want to do more than he has to. But he seems a decent enough man other than that. Moyes just needs to keep him on his toes. Manny, on the other hand, seems to possess a stubborn streak and looks thoroughly miserable sometimes. That's part of his character which Moyes has to understand to get the best out of him. You can't change a person's fundamental psychological make-up, but you can work around it. I think one criticism of Moyes in the past is him expecting everyone to be able to become carbon-copies of himself. But he seems to be getting over that these days.

With Mikel, though, I'm not so sure that Moyes could work with him. Like you say, he does seem to be nasty at times and interested primarily himself, and how he looks. I don't think you can accuse Yak or Manny of having similar traits. Okay, I'm not accusing Mikel of being akin to someone like Barton. I just feel that we can probably spend £10-15m in a better and more constructive way. I don't want a costly, young, risky player to come here unless he arrives in a manner similar to Manny. So if we could loan this guy first then I would be all for it. But that would be as far as I go.

Good post mate and I agree with your points on Fernandes and Yakubu.(y)

Even then though at the time no one would have said they where Moyes type players yet Moyes proved everyone wrong and went for them. I think he's realised that you can't always have players like Carsley, Stubbs, Weir and Hibbert etc who just get on with it and are model professionals.

That’s another area he’s improved on in my opinion. He’s learned to deal with different personalities whereas a few years ago he wouldn’t have looked at a player like Yakubu.

Mikel for me isn’t a bad lad from what I’ve seen and heard. He’s an aggressive 100% player yes and sometimes he does let that get the better of him but that’s just his game. If you took it away from him he wouldn’t be as effective. He’s got a little bit of Gravesen about him in my opinion. I wasn’t always Tommy’s biggest fan but I liked his never say die attitude, his aggression and his willingness to get on the ball. I think in some areas Mikel has that about him.

As I’ve said I do feel we need more aggression in the side as well. Currently I’d only say Cahill gives us that which is why he’s so important. Fair enough if you think we can get better options in, as I said he’s just a suggestion.
