Quite oddly the Peninsular Army was about 20% Irish at the time, the word English at the time did actually mean anyone from the British Isles, as nationalism didn't really exist at the time, divisions were more based on religion or class than on nationality. A large portion of the British Army at the time consisted of (willing) Scots and Welshman, the British Empire was as much Scottish and Welsh as 'English.'

Don't forget though that the Act of Union was directly caused by Scotland bankrupting itself attempting to colonise Nova Scotia and the Caribbean.
