John Oster was my Bily way back when. Can still remember me and my dad talking him and Cadamarteri up, granted it didn't take much to shine in our team of that time..

gareth farrelly, claus thomsen, tony thomas, the list goes on and on.

I always used to call Tony Thomas "Terry Thomas" to the great amusement of my son and his mates. I also once called Terry Phelan "Terry Phenal" and loudly announced that we had gone to a "3 man back four"

I am such a tit!

Playing at any level Professionally is still quite good, and pays more than any of us get.

Still living the dream of sorts.

I would be more than happy if my son plays for Oldham / Rochdale etc

True, to a point, but perhaps not, depending on what level you are at. If you are a journeyman in the 3rd or 4th tier then you are hardly raking it in.

This is interesting:

Annual-foot-wage-increase-since-84.jpg
So the average annual wage in league 2 (3 seasons ago) is a few thousand more than the average worker's annual wage. I know plenty of people who are earning quite a bit below average wage, so even a journeyman player in league 2 will be earning as much as, if not more than most people. Obviouisly not going to sort there future out though

It's very interesting, that table.

Back in the 80s averages top flight wages were roughly 3 times that of the common man. Now they are closer to 30 times. That is staggering. But at the same time, wages in the the lower tiers are still comparable to the ordinary man. So all the money is siphoned off at the top of the game. That's pretty depressing - if there's no money at the lower levels, is it any wonder that our national game has fallen miles behind?

Basically, players wages are comparable to:

PL- top banker
Championship - Company director
1st Div - Doctor
2nd Div - teacher

Thing is, if you're at "doctor" or "teacher" level - what happens when your playing career is finished? You've passed your peak earning and have 50 years ahead of you.

Eunan O'Kane scored for Bournemouth at the DW yesterday aswel. Remember him looking decent for us in a few friendlies.

After we released him he tore up the Irish League with Coleraine before moving to Torquay. He seems to be progressing well through the lower leagues.

loudly announced that we had gone to a "3 man back four"

Made me laugh out loud. Oster was a prospect thrown in too early to a very poor team and had to play the majority of the matches as those behind him were even worse.

That table has proved my point.

I am on less than the League 2 Average wage, and i am comfortable.

Being in your 20's earning 30k a year is decent imo.

Probably for another discussion, but 30k a year is about £2000 take home. Believe me, it doesn't go too far nowadays. You'd struggle to be able to buy a 1 bet flat for on that salary in many parts of the country. Guess that means a gumtree flatshare - hardly the lap of decadence for a professional sportsman.
