Ah yes, "the new Ryan Giggs" we used to call him. He probably still looks about 16, though. Ironic that Giggsy will probably still be playing when Oster's hung up his boots.

I remember him being billed as the new Giggs. Weirdly, Dan Gosling reminded me of him, the snidey little get.

For most young players, professional football is too much, too soon. If you're 18 and sign a professional contract for £20k a week then in your mind you've "made it"... but nothing could be further from the truth. You immediately think that you're worth that much. It's silly money for a just a kid, but that's just the way it is as football is such big business now. The sums of money are so staggeringly large that it is only players who can disregard the money side have any chance of really making it at the top level, but most will have their head turned and never be the player they can be.

I remember when Oster first signed for us and played in a Televised pre-season game vs Chelsea. It marked the start of short lived HK3 era. Christ, we were gash back in those days. Anways, I remember at the start of the 2nd half he went on a great charge forward from midfield, unleashed an absolute thunderbolt of a shot that smashed against the crossbar, it was almost one of the best goals I had ever seen... unfortunately it was all downhill after that.

Oster's Wiki entry says:

Oster moved to Sunderland for a fee in excess of £1 million,[SUP][1][/SUP] but again failed to find regular form.[SUP][citation needed][/SUP] His low point at the club was when he was involved in an incident that ended the career of reserve player Mark Maley by accidentally shooting him in the eye with an air rifle.

Jesus - I didn't know that!!

Met him a few weeks ago when the Barnet team stayed at the hotel I work at in Newcastle, a bit arrogant, he near died of embarassment when I asked about his time at Everton.

Seen a few ex Everton youth player at Aldershot and to be fair the only one that seemed to have anything was Baxter playing for Palace on trial pre-season. Obviously overweight and unfit but still passed the ball well. Recently seen Akpan and Nsiala and definately think they have found their level.

i heard it was adrian heath who reccomended him to Peter reid working as Reidys number 2 after being sacked by us (as Kendalls number 2) .

Intresting Heath was assistant manager for his 2 big premership moves, any link to his agent?

He had decent ability on the ball. Although I remember a few games under Reid where he got in some great goalscoring positions and you would have thought he was trying to kick a cannon ball! The ball trickled back to the keeper. West Ham at home springs to mind he started up front with Dichio. Definately a decent Championship player which he proved under McCarthy.

As mentioned he had no fight in him at all, bottled tackles that were 70/30 in his favour. He was weak as piss and that's where the critisim stems from imo.

walking in an Oster wonderland!

great song, and spot on assessment, he had less heart than hitler.

Our youth system was good when Colin harvey ran it.

Been rather shte since but yeah fans tend to go overboard, watching Rodwell and Barkley left me wondering why the hype.

Oster had the look of and played like a Priest's victim
