Current Affairs John McCain - hero or Republican

Didn't know about this

I didn't either. Just a glimpse into a life and world that is extremely complex - and to his credit, John McCain made mistakes, but tended to acknowledge them and (at least attempt) to correct his course.

That's a good life lesson.

Now, for a very geeky aside: I had a small role in the cleanup of Lincoln Savings & Loan (the banking institution behind the Keating 5 scandal) as I worked for the Resolution Trust Corporation ("RTC") that oversaw the liquidation of Lincoln and all the claims against its bankruptcy. I was the Claims Specialist who got to review thousands of claims and determine if the claimants would receive a portion of the distributions from the estate. One of the most fun claims to deny was that of Charles Keating (the man who owned it and was the leading cause of its failure) when he asked for his legal bills to be paid by Lincoln's Directors and Officers corporate liability insurance policy. As he was being sued by the RTC for his role in the failure, effectively asking us to pay for his defense was just a bridge too far.

Republicans and heroes are not mutually exclusive categories, obviously.

Absolutely

I take it most people know that the democrats were the party of slavery, and had a lower percentage of votes in both houses for the civil rghts bill in 1964

Yes I do, thankfully it isn’t 1964.

Although you might want to tell Corey Stewart in Virginia your little history lesson and remind him that Lincoln was the leader of the Republican party and against the Confederacy because he doesn’t seem to have got the memo

"We weaken our greatness when we confuse our patriotism with tribal rivalries that have sown resentment and hatred and violence in all the corners of the globe. We weaken it when we hide behind walls, rather than tear them down, when we doubt the power of our ideals, rather than trust them to be the great force for change they have always been."

Oh, it's true - it's part of the story of the twists and turns of American politics, party identity, party names and personalities - and to just put this out for comment without context seems under-informed to me.

But, more fairly, I should have asked: what's your point?
The point is that its turned completely around and the parties are complete opposites of what they were not much more than 50 yrs ago
