I'm not criticizing Robles at all. He was great yesterday and he's been good since taking over as our number one keeper. I just don't see any point in anointing him as the starter next season at this point. We have to sign another goalkeeper in the summer no matter what, and there's absolutely no point in limiting ourselves by saying Robles is going to be the starter. We can attract a lot higher quality in the market if prospective transfers know they at least will be given a shot at winning the starting job in preseason. And, really, if the opportunity is there to go after someone like ter Stegen or Butland or Navas, it would be silly not to just because we already have Robles. What more do you want out of a keeper who has given us a draw in the last two games yet for him it would have been defeats ?????
TBH you would moan at Degea!
hmm.
I've been doing a bit of thinking on it really.
People keep saying to me, Yes Joel IS good, he's a good premier league goalie, but we need better.
But.. i'm looking at his abilities now, and what he does, which is impressive, and i compare it to his negatives (his positioning sometimes, and sometimes his command of area) and his negatives are things that only come with game time.
I do think it'd be great to go out there and get a ready made top quality keeper, but i actually fully believe and will stand by, with game time Joel robles could become a quality keeper.
He has already improved radically from his first season, where he only had shot stopping and kicking, now he makes much better decisions, his closing down of the forwards is much better, and his closing down of angles has improved, but still needs to improve further.
I think for a keeper, he is still young, he is still inexperienced and in some cases that does show, because he hasn't been able to go on and play a 100 odd games in lower leagues, if he plays a hundred odd games for us he will become a similar level to someone like Butland, because he has natural ability.
A few games this season, and definitely last season he has kept us in games, and with a better organised defence he would rack up a lot of clean sheets, that's something that a (hopefully new) manager will sort out, and it'll save us a lot of money to spend elsewhere.

If we end up signing someone good and Robles still beats him out as the starter, all the better. I just don't see the point in targeting one of those career backup types like Alex Mccarthy or Paulo Gazzaniga just because we think Robles is good enough.
Why would we need an "experienced backup", though? What benefit did Stoke derive from having Sorensen last season? Why not just go out and get one goalkeeper, the best we can afford, instead of getting two who are half the value? There should be a plan in place for this position.
It seems to be that weve not had any real plan or consistency here and just reacted to players not being good enough...
What we need is to have a top first choice keeper + experienced backup. We also need to have a player with huge potential to eventually take the position.
Stoke are a great example as they had
Begovic
Sorensen
Butland
Thats great planning. As of the summer we will only have Robles....this is an opportunity for us now to do similar to Stoke and improve this position.

Or option C sack the muppets who chose Timmy for 18 months too long!Well, thats what i thought i wrote? Theres 3 options really and it depends on whether robles is seen as first choice next season. For me, id just go and sign the best possible which should be Rico or Leno.
Option A:
Sign a top keeper
Robles is number 2 (or we send him on loan and get in experienced backup)
Option B:
Sign a potentially top class keeper (send on loan)
Get experienced backup
