Joe Royle discussion thread

To slightly misquote the Yosser Hughes/ Souness gag "He played like me" . When I played football in school I always used to roll my sleeves up to the elbow. When Joe broke through into the first team I read an article saying you could tell he was a player who gave 100% effort because he rolled his sleeves up - just like me . How could I not love him.

Went to Bellefield in 96 to watch the team train, was 10 then. Had the same black/blue Umbro coat Big Joe used to wear. My dad got a boss picture of me standing next to him in the touch line talking about the players. Was great with us that day

If he would've stayed as manager we would've went a whole lot further. He had the team playing well and achieving. It's a shame he left because he knew himself he would've took everton far

Only saw him as a player when he scored for Norwich at the street end, think we got applauded...

YES! Someone else who remembers that. Was the first game my Dad took me to. Joe Royle scored for Norwich and the whole ground cheered. Was fecking awesome.

Never really knew him as a player, loved him as our manager.

If there is one man in our club set up who knows what it's like to pull up your socks and get back to basics it's Royle. It'd make sense for him to have a more prominent role in the actual squad and try get them pumped up

Pumping a squad up doesn't directly lead to better results on the pitch.

Granted it is obvious Martinez hasn't got great motivational skills but there is no need to go 180 degrees the other way. There's a reason he along with Hoddle, Venebels, O'Leary, haven't had a job at this level in donkeys.

Agree 100% but for a one off cup game, I'd give him a go

Famous last words but there's no way in hell we're gonna win on Saturday with the current regime in place - it'll probably be over by half time

I get the point you're making but United aren't going to play nearly the same way as the kopite's did yesterday.

Their slow and ponderous stuff is exactly the kind of stuff that will suit us. I just don't see the value of it because given the current options available in the squad I don't think he could do much different tactically or positionally to influence them.

And changing a system entirely before a big game can be quite detrimental, no matter what the situation or circumstances.
