Pretty amazing to think of where the U.S. was in terms of development & infrastructure not too long ago.
We had no league, but some ambition to compete in WC. So a bunch of college kids signed contracts w/ USSF. Some, like JMM, managed to work out arrangements while under contract to try their luck overseas. And as basically no American had ever had ANY success at the time, the few that went over had to work that much harder to earn their way.
Also interesting how in the interview they were very clearly trying to bait JMM into saying, "freddy adu & jozy altidore have been handed the world on a platter, they think they're better than they are, & they need to figure out how to bust their a$$ & fight for their place like you guys had to; oh yeah, except michael bradley, he gets it, those guys should take note of him".
I consider mcbride & dempsey in the same general category, worked through the adversity the right way. Interestingly, Landon was dangerously close to going the other way, imo. Unprecedented hype for an American player, flashes of brilliance, gave up & came home multiple times when adversity hit, frequent bouts of immaturity & even arrogance, questionable focus & determination (at times). Then, credit to him, he grew up & (largely thanks to everton, although I think people underestimate the impact of his bayern spell; he may not have been welcomed, but he competed for playing time w/ some of the best players in the world...& having watched every game & even preseason matches, I can tell you he fit in just fine w/ toni, klose, podolski, etc.) Finally put together his talent w/ the proper mentality & approach required to succeed at the highest professional levels.
But I digress...what's up w/ those kits??!!
