The whole “Biden is senile” thing is such a weird gambit from the Trumpists.

Just from a political standpoint, it’s so incredibly risky, and with (as has already been shown) relatively little upside. And given Trump’s own problems in that arena (eg his doctors felt the need to give him a dementia test, which he then boasts about passing, while simultaneously declaring how difficult it was), it just gets even weirder.

There is pressure on Biden not to have a “oops” moment

But that downside isn’t exclusive to Biden and isn’t age specific as Rick Perry’s subsequent presidential fortunes showed. I suppose that Biden could over-compensate in preparation but he has had some more recent experience of debating that probably helped.

I too am a bit baffled by the “Trump is going to wipe the floor with him” expectation setting. Obama was a decent debater but because he hadn’t worked on it for a while and assumed interviews/speeches were an acceptable substitute Romney kicked his ass in their first debate.

Not saying that is going to happen here mind, just that the bar is very low for Biden and pretty high for Trump.

People claimed Trump wiped the floor with Hillary Clinton in the debates because they hated Clinton so much and because their expectations of Trump were so low that the fact that he managed to croak out, "No puppet; no puppet. You're the puppet; you're the puppet" without falling off the stage seemed to represent a sort of victory. And this from a dude who was coming off a decade of appearances on a weekly TV show.

If I were Biden I'd probably publicly ponder the pointlessness of debating someone who lies by default.

The daft thing is that Trump will rant and ramble incoherently throughout the debate, sprinkling in lies liberally in every answer, while Biden will say 500,000 when he meant 500 million, and the likes of Finners and our green friend will say “see? He’s losing his marbles!”

Absolutely true ^^^^^^^^^^
We have a president that is so utterly incompetent, corrupt, and dishonest that it's normalized, but if Biden say "hat" when he meant "bat" Tucker Carlson will get a chimp-boner like he's found a cache of fresh figs, and all of Fox News writers will be furloughed because they will stretch this hat/bat slip-up across 12 days. Mustard...tan suit...etc. etc.

Am sure Trump team have “Benghazi “ ads in preparation.
Then Dems should have the ad in the works contrasting the long, fruitless Benghazi hearings that resulted in bupkis to the multiple indictments issuing from or adjacent to the Mueller investigation. I still think Harris would be a better pick but Biden's already got history and an established comfortable working relationship with Rice.

Biden might be a duffer, but that isn't the point. Biden, if elected, will allow a technocratic handling of the Covid19 crisis - he'll stand clear of the expert agencies and take their advice and implement it.

I think most Americans will realise that the real choice in November is between either more chaos or competency.
