TBF pete we don't know; all I'd point out is that the decision was changed within hours to the right one.

Contrast that with HMG basically ordering Oxford not to deal with a US firm because we couldn't trust Trump not to filch the doses.
Biden also doesn’t tweet, often in all caps, whatever momentarily crosses into his mind whilst he watches tv at 6am

Waiting a bit to comment and dialing down the outrage meter when you do are under-appreciated skills I feel.

Not to minimize the situation at the Irish border, because it’s obviously an important piece in global politics, but we’re in the midst of the greatest national health and economic crisis in a century and also less than a month removed from a violent mob trying to overthrow our own government. It’s not necessarily at the top of his triage list right now.

agree, but I’m surprised this is the first I’m hearing of it. A high % of Americans are of Irish descent and this is a foreign policy matter that would get more attention than the latest news from the Middle East which most Americans tune out IMO.

Hence my question really, especially considering we in the U.K. kept hearing that Biden would scupper any FTA between the USA and U.K. if there was any disruption of the border. So even though the U.K. and ROI kept saying, and being ignored, that no hard border would be put in place, the only one pushing for it was the EU....

Couple initial thoughts.
1. Targeted stimulus based on income and income changes seems ok, but need to see the details. Even here, we’ve seen people say they’re getting checks and don’t need them because of an arbitrary income cutoff. If you were living on $60k/year before and still are, why do you need the money? Possible it’d be better spent by extending unemployment benefits?
2. Rather than eliminate the minimum wage increase from the legislation altogether, why not target it in the same way? $15 is vastly
different pending where you are. Again, seems arbitrary.

What are the odds it even matters? Is it just the West Va guy that needs convincing or are are others also on the fence?

1) I used to think that targeting help via unemployment was the best approach but that particular system is so slow to get help to people, states were already struggling to cope with outdated systems and there have been other issues
Despite it lacking finesse the checks do get the cash in people’s hands before the rent is due.

2) Not sure if the federal negotiations can have that regional variation, presume if they can it ill be part of some other GOP counter-proposal.

iirc to pass legislation without reconciliation they need 10 GOP to sign on. Manchin himself might get some cover to sign on because of statements like this from his state’s gov (who was a big Trump supporter)

I hate that government inefficiently breeds more government inefficiency and takes better options off the table as a result, though I can’t say I’m surprised. Thanks for the info. That CA story is ridiculous.

Re: Minimum wage, I feel like there has to be a way to enforce a requirement while leaving some up to states/local governments to decide what fits within those requirements. That might age better as well as with inflation, we’ll be back to the same table in 5 years anyways if we do go with a federal flat rate.

Having it based on local cost of living would be great, but so complicated. Is it the location of the employer, the building you work in, where the employee lives? For multi-city/state businesses payroll would be a nightmare. And the complaints over different pay for the same job throughout the company.

Sometime the delays in unemployment systems were not just the usual inefficiency but by design :(

Hopefully the pandemic results in the systems getting overhauled as unemployment benefits are one of the best stabilizing methods whenever we hit a recession (which will keep on coming round at regular intervals so we better make them easier to deal with)

It would have to be based on where the employee was based I’d think. Different pay for the same job exists and is enforced quite frequently today. Currently most of my team lives in Cali. I actually manage someone who makes more than me as a result. Always fun to see that...Just gave him a raise too.

I don’t disagree with the idea of having minimum wage be region based, but I think $15/hr as the absolute floor nationwide is reasonable. After taxes and insurance deductions, you’re still not even bringing home $500/week at that rate, and even here in TN which is one of the cheapest places in the country to live you would struggle to do anything more than just get by.
