I have a friend who voted for Trump, I've talked about him before. Tuesday we got a beer and 2 other friends showed up and he started bitching about taxes and that Biden is going to raise them. Told him that Trumps "AMAZING" tax thing was scheduled to start kicking in higher taxes this year anyways. He didn't believe me until he read up on it.

Then I asked him about healthcare. He was ADAMANT that there shouldn't be any nationalized health care. No matter how many things he threw at me and I gave rebuttals he said that we don't need it(then why has no other developed country in the WORLD EVER gone from a nationalized health care to the US version?), taxes will go up (they will, yup. But you don't have to pay for insurance or out of pocket stuff), etc.

Basically was saying "this is a political issue, we shouldn't be talking about it at the bar" which I get but health care SHOULDN'T be a political fn issue ffs..

Could not have put it better myself.

Been in arguments with a few Americans over Health Care and some of them have this warped view that they would be paying for somebody else's health care. It is like they actually think somebody will come round and tell them that they are having $3K taken out of their bank account because Joe Bloggs from wherever needs a liver transplant.

Could not get it through their thick heads that they pay a little bit out of their wage and then they can use the service as well, even if they lose their insurance or even my example of their closest family member loses their job (through no fault of their own), then has the misfortune to get a curable but debilitating disease, however, because they lost their insurance and have no disposable income to pay for it they have to live (or even die) because you live in a largely selfish population who won't have a small part of their wage go to a service that saves lives......Nope, still came back with waiting times and I am not paying for other peoples health care.

All correct. In addition, an argument heard often from opponents of a national/government system is "the government will ration care".

My Old Man was pretty conservative but came around later in life. Even as a conservative he saw through that nonsense argument. "So you don't think insurance companies ration care? How do you think they make a profit for Christ's sake?"

I even made the point that making healthcare nationalized would cause a lot more people to try to do small businesses on their own. I used myself as an example, I've been toying with the idea to open a deli down here because, shockingly, theres NOTHING like that down here in Richmond. I would say one of my biggest obstacles is I need health insurance for myself and I would need it for employees if I wanted to keep the good ones.

Health care tied to employment basically makes you an indentured servant to the company you work for because who the hell wants to chance the 3 months or whatever before you get it from your new job? Making health care a public right would spur on probably the largest entrepreneur endeavors this country has seen in 60 years.

Don't get me started!

All these folks that don't have insurance or at best inadequate insurance for most of their lives, end up on Medicare at age 65 or earlier due to disability due to poor healthcare! So taxpayers end up paying for all the long term consequences of poor access to healthcare. So short sighted. Prevention is cheaper! And it allows people to work instead of being sick so they contribute to the tax base, etc, etc.

Bit off topic, but I think I know the type of deli you’re thinking about (common LI roots) and it would do really well down there. Spent four years in Williamsburg and there weren’t any proper NY-style delis for miles and miles.
I work with quite a few new business owners in the DC area, so if you ever have any questions about starting a new business feel free to drop me a line.
Anyway, sorry everyone if this is off-topic

Yeah absolutely! And that's the rub, there are a TON off new yorkers down here and nothing like "home". So weird. I had a friend come to my wedding on long island and he went to just one of those delis and he said it was the best sammich he's ever had and it wasn't even that exotic. It's not a difficult concept which confuses the ever loving crap out of me of why there's none around!

Flip this around, my best man at my wedding has a sticker on his truck that says "I don't trust the LIBERAL media". I give him crap for that all the time "Oh, I guess you get your news from reputable places liek OAN, huh?" "no, I don't trust them either". Weird guy political-wise.

Anyways, he is STAUNCHLY against medicare for all/nationalized health care. His wife refused to work until his girls got old enough to be in school as they would "be spending all the money she makes on daycare anyways". Anyways, my friends now ex-wife and I argued with him and his wife for hours one night about how much easier it would be for him with this as he works construction and has NO INSURANCE. He didn't change his mind at all. Except his daughter was diagnosed with diabetes(the one you need insulin for), so they put them on the NY child healthcare thing where they didn't have to pay anything towards it.
So it's fine for his girls to go on a socialized healthcare but any adult should be SOL.

Sometimes I just want to bash my head against a wall again...

This small gesture speaks volumes about our first lady.
