This one interview I had was with myself and a much older gentleman.
The interview was conducted in a tiny room... One table and two chairs.
And when I get nervous, I get 'stress gas', so while the older man was conducting the interview, I couldn't help myself, and I let rip a silent, but deadly, proper paint peeler! The putrid odour almost immediately started filling up the room. Even I started gagging. It didn't help that I had had a super spicy curry for lunch a couple of hours prior.
I could see the look of discomfort on the man's face, as he was trying to ask me interview questions. Eventually he gave up, stood up and hastily said: 'Thank you for coming in. We'll get back to you.' He then left the room, almost in a sprint. At that moment, I knew I wasn't getting the job.

True story.
I went for an interview at 16 years old for a painting and decorating apprenticeship.
It was Monday 9am.
The interviews were that week.
I was first in ,proper old school foreman type interview, we got on great ,to a point a younger manager told him ,there is more than one applicant.
Anyway the fella asked me ...was I a Catholic, I replied ,yes..then he said if your a red the jobs yours...I apologised and said sorry I'm a blue,he said, never mind.
This was only 1980....still got offered.
Also tried for the police,failed, cos I had a father...

I once applied for a job via the echo, the usual blurb of “smart, dedicated individuals wanted for sales driven oriented business”
I walked around a north wales town with a feller trying to sell kids toys out of our bag door to door to shops.

So your job was a fix aswell then ?
Yes by recommendation of the head of Horticulture at Reaseath at that time he was asked by a parks Manager if he knew a very good grower of plants & recommended me - I had an informal interview before it went nationwide & I got it on the terms I negotiated prior to the dummy real interview 9 were interviewed..
E.g headhunted....
It was in the bag again the unions insisted it went out for internal & external interviews ...
Most big employers have to do it ...
I never got the choice of my no 2 like the Harrogate situation though !

Definitely a Beano joke that one probably told it on the Ark...
Tbf, he didn't ask about carpentry...
For my first job application after university, for some reason, I had put in the CV that I had travelled extensively in Italy when I had only been to Milan briefly for my cousin’s wedding. One of the interviewers had lived in Rome for 10 years and was amazed when I said I had never heard of the Spanish Steps. I was not appointed.
