2025/26 Jarrad Branthwaite

Holgate was never anywhere near the level that Branthwaite has shown, not even close to being close to being close. He had a couple of months of looking like a half decent centre half in his entire career but people on here massively overrated him. Branthwaite is arguable slightly overrated by our fan but to nowhere near the same extent, he's a genuinely top quality player.
It’s easy to forget but around 2020 Holgate was definitely looking like he’d be a good PL CB, or more basically my point is he certainly didn’t look like he’d be Qatari second division at 28 or whatever he is now.

In moments Branthwaite might’ve looked better but if he’s not playing consistently his levels will drop the same way as Holgate. Relative to their potential I think Branthwaite ultimately becoming a solid Everton CB would be a huge disservice to where he looked like he could be, but if injuries keep popping up they’ll derail him completely.

….the thing is with dodgy hamstrings that players subconsciously play with the handbrake on. You’re just waiting for the scar tissue to pop so invariably protect the muscle.

I’m sure he’ll get back and have spells being injury free but they’ll go again at some stage. As I said years ago with DCL, the trick is to sell when his stock is relatively high again. Hopefully that happens.
I suppose the hope would be at least at CB you can work around physical limitations a lot more, and he won’t need to sprint constantly. He needs to get a good 2 seasons of consistently playing for me to be relied upon.

….the operation might do the trick. Ironically, I thought Tarkowski would be the one following his more severe hamstring injury but he’s been an ever-present (touch wood).

I recall Barkley had a severe issue and had an op, he seemed fine since.

Keane hasn’t been a disaster and nor has Tarkowski. But together I don’t think they make a good partnership. They did 10 years ago under Dyche in a low block. We need pace and mobility back there, I was really looking forward to Branthwaites return
Going to be a while. Hopefully we can get a RB in January and O'Brien can play in his best position

He could quite easily be back in a few months certainly not writing off the entire season.
Likely be 3 to 4 months after hamstring surgery. Then the club won't want to rush him back, then he will need to get his fitness up - he's had no pre-season. Then it's going to take him a while to get over the mental block that his body might let him down again.

I think the season is basically a write off for him. As in, he will play again this season, but we will not see much of him, or the best of him. Just have to hope we are active in January and that this surgery solves the problem.

It’s not in moments, branthwaite has shown way, way, more than holgate ever did. You’re right, for a period in 2020 I thought holgate might make it as a PL centre half but he basically just regressed back to the mean and looked like he had before that so he didn’t. Branthwaite is levels above that, a regression to where he was 2 years ago would still make him an above average PL centre half.
