2025/26 Jarrad Branthwaite

Injuries are getting a bit much for him now at this point. Defenders develop a lot at his age and there's a reason people can see potential in players, if you miss too many games though you'll never reach the heights. From our perspective it's very easy to see him becoming the next John Stones, however is it also too early to say if he'd be the next Mason Holgate? Any player's levels can drop drastically when you're not playing for long stretches.

On the cusp of COVID, Holgate was about to be called into the England squad I'm pretty sure, but he didn't play much after that and his career never recovered. Branthwaite has to be very determined to get through this spell because otherwise he'll be another like Holgate who had the potential and that's it, rather than the likes of Stones who had it all, and even with injuries got through it to the top level. Even on a lower level we saw with the likes of Galloway and Garbutt before that sometimes potential is just that, and even if they show it at a younger age, there's no guarantee that translates to "26 year old experienced PL player" which is exactly what we need, they sometimes lose it too as we've seen.

….the thing is with dodgy hamstrings that players subconsciously play with the handbrake on. You’re just waiting for the scar tissue to pop so invariably protect the muscle.

I’m sure he’ll get back and have spells being injury free but they’ll go again at some stage. As I said years ago with DCL, the trick is to sell when his stock is relatively high again. Hopefully that happens.

I feel really sorry for the guy. I guess we will be lucky to see him this season and certainly no hopes of him being in the World Cup squad. He must be gutted.
I am glad we signed Keane up this summer but I do not feel comfortable with him being our only choice at CB. He has a goal in him in every game, sadly at either end.
Moyes will want stability based on this happening so we will see Keane and Tarkowski there for at least a few games. Garner and Gana in the middle through to the next break, then Afcon then the January window.

Your choice would have been not to have given him a new contract?

Thank god we did, as I have no faith at all that we would have signed a replacement.
I wish we’d just signed a right back and played JOB at centre back.

Keane hasn’t been his usual disastrous self this season I’ll admit but having two slow centre backs limits us I feel.

I just find it galling that 9 years of being largely terrible was rewarded with a new contract.

But we needed him and this has proved right

And you can't play with the handbrake on in his position
I fear for his future given his injury record so far

….you might remember James McCarthy was at the top of his game when he got a bad hamstring injury on international duty. He was one who played with the handbrake on and his form suffered but then he had a brilliant performance against Arsenal. He’d clearly let the handbrake off but the hamstring popped again in the next game against the RS.

Keane hasn’t been a disaster and nor has Tarkowski. But together I don’t think they make a good partnership. They did 10 years ago under Dyche in a low block. We need pace and mobility back there, I was really looking forward to Branthwaites return
