January Transfer Window 2026

good chance we can go 5th with a win over brentford. chelsea away to city, united away at in form leeds and calvert lewin (will be a bear pit there) and sunderland away to spurs

then playing wolves three days later and an fa cup break means we could still be there coming late into jan

i think tfg could be cautious with funds because relegation isnt a threat, but being in that position could trigger them to release some serious funds to go and get europe

The African Nations Cup - as old-timers like me used to know it - was notoriously dour, defensive, and brutal. World Soccer used to suggest that Euro coaches going there put most emphasis on organisation as the quickest win and so defensive solidity became the order of the day.

In reality, most international football today - mainly because of bloated tournaments - is rubbish. In the past, you had 8 or 16 team Euros, 16 or 24 team World Cups and 12 team AFCONs. There was something elite about them. Nowadays we look forward to Cape Verde and Uzbekistan in the World Cup... With the best will in the world, these may be very good generational sides from these countries, but we won't know simply by seeing them qualify for tournaments that are now so big that the worst Republic of Ireland side in history is two matches away from.
Yeah 100% agree it's ridiculous the amount of teams. And with all due respect totally favoring South America, more qualified than failed to qualify from the league. It's rather mad.

The European championship was 8 I think until 1996.

1988 had 8 anyway...

Anyways I doubt many teams are scouting these championships for players. Our own two will be going the whole way to the final unfortunately.

I don't disagree that these tournaments are quite bloated now which can make them lost their sparkle a bit, but I do find it surprising when English people complain about this (Not sure if you are or not)

England are one of the main beneficiaries of the Euros being expanded from 8 teams to however many it is now. Back in the 70s and 80s, England seemed to not qualify more often than they succeeded, they also missed out on a few world cups, but they are pretty much guaranteed qualification nowadays

It's a bit like the Champions league - expand it to help ensure the big clubs get in, and they then get the resources needed to maintain their position.

Mad that Italy can’t seem to qualify for a World Cup then.

Need a right back asap O’Brien is wasted there and Patterson not good enough we would be so much better with a proper rb.
He is wasted there. But if jarrad is fit and tarks is starting he needs to play somewhere unless we play like a team that has one RB and LB in their squad and go 3 at the back. Those 3 would be a sick back 3 .

i never liked 3 at the back down the years, but those 3 together would be awesome: O'Brien and Jarrad are good to cover right and left as they are great in 1 v 1 and Tarks to hold the middle together. If only we had good attacking full backs :)
