January Transfer Window 2026

Thats the reality of the premier league.

Look at the forwards teams signed in the summer; Isak £125m, Ekitike £79m. Sesko £74m, Mbeumo £74m, Cunha £62.5m, Woltemade £65m, Pedro £60m, Gyokeres £64m

The cost for players goes up every season, those players in the £60m to £70m category back in about 2002 they would have cost £30m or less.

Age and length of contract will always be a factor in a players value. Because if you sign a £30m 22 year old on a 4 year contract you can depreciate it over the 4 years, meaning it costs you £7.5m a year.

which means after 3 years you have a 25 year old player, at that point you have 2 options, either sign him to a new contract, or sell him, But being 25 it is more likely that he will still have some value.

Whereas if you sign a 30 year old player on a 4 year contract, by the time they reach the send of that contract they have no inherent value and will most likely be playing on a year to year contract, if they are playing at all.

They’re all different levels completely though.

Just taking a Dutch league example: best striker that league has had for years was Pavlidis, moved in 2024 to Benfica aged 24 for £15m, much better player than Pepi is/was.

That’s the sort of deal to make. Not £30m punts.

being reported online that we are interested in Doue, but there is also speculation in the article that Moyes would prefer premier league experience. I think the French league is probably the closest to the Premier league, in terms of speed and physicality. It would be nice to have a natural RB again, but I dont see the sense in signing him if the manager isnt going to give him a go

That's the same article as in the Daily Fail, Moyes would prefer Premier League experience kind of limits us if true as there's not many Premier League experienced right backs I can think of who are available and are at the level we need going forward. Plus Doue looks good in those youtube highlights and certainly looks like he has the physicality Moyes wants in his players

Not saying those players wouldn't be an upgrade on Barry and Beto, but half of them have the same or similar number of goals, despite costing twice as much. A consistent striker is very difficult to scout and sign, which is why so few clubs have really outstanding ones.

That is worrying, Barry is up there with the worst we’ve ever had, the odd goal doesn’t change that. Keeping him as first choice is just throwing away this season.

Barry is a young lad in his first season in the toughest league in the world playing for a team that doesnt create chances.

He's not world class but he's improving every game and his goals have been taken well. If we get some fullbacks and actually try to cross to the lad now and then he'll score alot more imo.

Age shouldn’t dictate whether a fee is decent or not. We can’t go back to just spaffing money on players.
While I disagree with the post you're replying to in isolation - obviously age doesn't equal value by itself - these two sentences are in direct opposition to each other. Part of not going back to just spaffing money on players means taking age heavily into account when it comes to what is a good fee or not, because a) room for improvement and b) resale value are so so important for a club trying to get to the next level.

Being saddled with lots of average players in their late 20s or beyond is a death sentence for a club's recruitment possibilities

Imagine Chelsea would have first dibs with him being at Strasbourg
