January Transfer Window 2026

Is 'alright' and 'better than McNeil' what we want in the long term though, that's the point. Wilson is a decent player, always has been, but i'm not sure he's any more than decent really. Theoretically a slight upgrade on McNeil is a good thing obviously, but would Wilson come here to be a bit part player like McNeil is? And if he would what does it say about him?

There are certainly worse signings we could make but if the rebuild we've been waiting years for levels out at signing half decent 29 year old PL midtable fodder to play every week then there's going to be a lot of people on the season ticket waiting list who get the chance for a ticket in the next year or two.
This is, articulated much better than I managed, exactly what I was trying to get at.

He's alright. He's having pretty much the season of his life and that never lasts, so think more about the Wilson of the last 3 or 4 years as far as what you're likely to get here.

He IS better than McNeil, but that bar is practically floor level. When you're looking at signing a player who's 29 next month, I'd want him to be able to come in and improve us significantly like Grealish and Dewsbury-Hall have done. Wilson isn't moving the dial a huge amount. He's a decent-ish midtable player but I'd like to have thought that we would either be buying potential (George, Dibling, Barry, Aznou, etc) or someone who is significantly improving us right now (Grealish, KDH), this one doesn't fit either category for me, it just sorts of pads out the squad and that's a bit underwhelming - particularly if he comes in a on a big wedge.

This. As a free or a really low fee for a squad player, it’s palatable especially in January. We need to be aiming higher. So id rather save the money and go big in the summer

Nice to be in a position to be looking at opportunistic signings unlike previous years with people trying to pick up our players

I agree, I'm amazed too.

However, why can other teams do it and we can't?
Ok - we were linked with two right backs that seemed to have any sort of substance in the stories this month in Norton-Cuffy and Holm. Neither of them have actually signed for the clubs that they're supposedly going to yet, so other teams aren't doing it either.

I agree entirely. There's a fixation on him because he's had a good run of late, despite being pretty anonymous in previous seasons and the fee might be reasonable because he's out of contract at the end of the season.

If he wants to leave on a free, he will some salary expectations that may not be in line with his performances. Plus as pointed out, he's 29.

There shouldn't be a direct comparison with McNeil, because frankly - given the talent in the squad, McNeil shouldn't be in the side at all right now.
He may be better than McNeil, but he will also be much more expensive and will saddle Everton with another long term contract at a point when we're trying to make significant upgrades to the playing squad; not just getting in Player A because he's "a bit better" than Player B.
