January Transfer Window 2026

I agree with a few exceptions. The teams that went into the championship or teams that have spent heavy for Europe but don’t look like they’ll be getting promoted/Europe next season need to start trimming the fat now.
Yeah, that's a good point. I guess there still has to be an element of marrying up those specific opportunities with what we need, though.

When people say there is no value in Jan, this is exactly what they're talking about. I would have been up for us taking a ~£20m flyer at this lad in the Summer when they've gone down, but a team sells their main striker and is desperate to replace him and all of a sudden they're coughing up £50m??
Which begs the question as to why we are unable to get a half decent fee for Beto.

They'd want that kind of money whenever they sell him, be it now or in July.

We just need to be far better at finding players before they reach Premier league level. There is value available in both windows if you are able to scout properly and then develop players. I dont think we do either particularly well.
Agree on the second point for sure.

On the first I maintain there's a Jan tax in there. I know footy maths is a mug's game, but just the very nature of Palace paying ~£10 more for JSL than they're getting for Mateta is bananas, and can surely only be borne of a *need* to replace him in the next few days. If this same scenario played out in the Summer once a) Wolves are down, and b) the market is in full flow, they don't pay much, if any more than £30m IMO.

All of which is why I make my peace with us doing our business in the Summer.

I think our overall improvement in performance has worked against us, there. JSL is seen as the striker who would bang them in were it not for the restrictions of playing for an all-but-relegated team. Beto was well positioned to attract buyers after a purple patch last year, and then has looked so hopeless in a better team than last year, that said patch has been exposed for what it was.

Our fan base are desperate though, because we see that our forward isn’t scoring loads & so the easy (and incorrect) solution is buying another one … but the issue is that we don’t support our striker enough/have runners that break the lines and go beyond the forward enough/vary how we get the ball into him enough/put a good cross in often enough.
No i'm happy with Barry, just i liked what i saw in Strand Larsen last season, and i cant hold this season against him..
A massive upgrade on Beto, and his 60m release clause has already dropped because of relegation worries.

I didn't realise it was 50m that he's going for now.

I think he would suit our play, but that is an expensive punt..

Tbh you’d be an upgrade on Beto 😆😆
but I totally agree with you both on him being a decent ish fit for us and also being hyper inflated price wise

We also look at the 2 lads we have who cant play the system Moyes seems to set out to play well i think thats the plan as most of the time i have no idea/plan we have of whacking the ball up to the solitary forward to hold and bring players in to the game neither Barry or Betto are any good at this to weak and easily knocked off the ball, poor first touch etc but Pickford continues game after game to just hit it up the middle

Wolves turned down £50 million for the exact same player last summer though.
