January Transfer Thread 2020

Wel its personal opinion, we did have a number of options, we had a choice whether to give baines a new contract, or go with a player with potential - he defintiely has that if Ac are dropping 6-10 million - we decided to bin - that is poor judegment.

We had many options:

We went with Baines, and Robinson paid for his one year deal. We need to go out now and pay 10-20 mill on a back up left back, or just keep the Cuco Martinas of this world.

We had many options, we could have loaned him to Wigan for 6 months, he would have played and we would be in the same position, but getting millions.

Bad judgement in my opinion. Massive clanger dropped.
Disagree. He isn't very good and we sold him to Wigan because he'd never play for us regularly and now a has-been Italian team are signing him and he'll probably play a small handful of games before he's shifted around again.

We did well to bring in some pennies and secure future pennies.

Ancelotti said in the presser that he's impressed by some of our players he didn't really know much about before like Holgate, DCl and... Michael Keane.
Okay, we we go into

The fact is we’re under stocked and have been all season. What if a centre back gets injured tomorrow?

There are a lot of things you can do, we've just done it with Gibson, loan out, with the reassurance of player pathway, sign a new contract etc. Simples.

Lads, it ok to acknowledge we dropped a clanger here.

But we already loaned him out. There was no pathway for him because the club don't rate him. He had no value in the transfer market because he was into the last year of his contract.

Milan are the ones dropping a clanger here.

@Neiler on Robinson...

Are you saying we should have released Baines last summer and kept Robinson because:

A: His value would have increased while he was in his last 12 months sat on the bench

B: We should have got more than (£1.9mil upfront + £1.2mil sell on) £3.1mil for him

C: He would have made a better bench player than Baines

Im a bit lost as if his contract was expiring after 12 months and he wanted to leave then what could we have done apart from hope he turned out a good backup (with limited games) and signed an extension.

If he didnt want to extend then we were always on the back foot.

If you look at the squad we had the option of four left backs, Garbutt, Baines, Martina, Digne and Robinson.

4 of those are still at the club, one is signing for AC Milan after increasing in value by 300-500%

Good decision or bad decision?

An asset is only worth what somebody is prepared to pay for it. There wasn't a bidding war for him in the summer or now. We had one offer for him then.

Milan have overpaid.

If Ancelotti is satisfied there isn't value to be had in the market now then who are we to argue?

What's the point in overpaying in January for average players if the ones you really want aren't available?

The point is plugging areas of weaknesses and trying to overhaul that relatively small gap to European football in a year when the league has been devoid of quality.

I refuse to believe there wasn't at least one target that was viable. There's thousands upon thousands of footballers and we have a guy who's only job is to scour the world and bring the right people in. And he's sat on his hands.

I've not been reading the whole thread

Is your argument that if we had kept him it'd now be us selling him to Milan for a decent wedge? Or is it that he would have kicked on and worked his way into the set up because he is good enough?

Because the latter one is pretty reasonable but the former one is positively mental
