The January window is mostly for clubs in the bottom half of the table.
However, I think this is a window that we Evertonians will look back on in amazement. The number of players shipped out is startling, Rodriguez, Kone, Gibson, Oviedo, Cleverley, Niasse McAleny and Deulofeu .
Add to that the number of under 23 sent out until the end of the season, Browning, Connolly, Grant, Dyson and I have probably forgotten a couple more.
Of that list, the only player I would have preferred to see stay is Oviedo. I think it is telling than his transfer was the only one that Koeman mentioned in his presser as being one he was initially against. I can understand why the player was frustrated at not getting much game time and I cannot fault his attitude or effort at any point in his time with us, so I wish him well. Garbutt is now the backup LB by default, and he has shown promise in glimpses... fingers crossed.
The loan deal for Geri makes sense if we are going to continue to play without wingers, because he needs to develop and he can't develop without considerable game time. If he has a good loan then there is every chance that he stays with us and plays a bigger role next season. He's young enough that it is a win-win move for us.
The rest though... non-contributors to a man. As others have said, we know that they are not good enough for us, so we are automatically better off giving game time to our own promising youth ahead of Kone, Niasse, Cleverly etc. Getting them off the wage bill and banking transfer / loan fees is a big improvement.
Finally, we had a target in this window. We signed him early, for a decent price. Added to that we got a promising youngster in who plays a position of need. Sure another player or two in would have been welcome (assuming they were of sufficient quality), but if the right players aren't there then we shouldn't simply sign any old guff just to boost a net spend figure.
