I really hope he pushes Howard for a starting spot. Howard's good and reliable, but just seems a bit suspect on long shots.

Actually, what am I saying, thinking about it, Howard is an excellent keeper. He very rarely makes mistakes, and pulls off some excellent saves

Nothing wrong w/ competition, if Mucha can earn the spot power to him. He sounds like a baller. And I'm sure he has no plans of conceding anything. Obviously as a Yank I'd hate to see our #1 get supplanted at club level considering it's the only position we're supposedly closer to traditional power nations (which, by the way....why does it seem like England is the complete opposite? Why can't you find some solid keepers?? It's not like you're losing all your Buffon's to NFL/NBA/MLB:D). When the question comes up as to why we can produce top goalie talent but not field players, a typical response is, "it's the one position our system can't screw up"!

As far as how good he is, to each their own. It's kind of a fickle, "you're as good as your most recent blunder", position. I admit started getting a bit (& I mean minor) nervous earlier in the year, then went through a stretch where I kind of didn't notice him outside a few outstanding saves (& I didn't miss a single Donovan game...yeah I know, I know). Then I thought, not noticing is actually a good thing for keepers (which I think is what you were alluding to BLS??). And when I think about all the bad luck goals, deflections, penalties, changing back line, etc....I've kind of settled back into "very confident" status. I've seen him enough w/ Nats to know he's the least of our concerns this summer. I can't imagine anybody who'd argue he's not easily above average EPL (personally believe he's fairly comfortably in top 5, but that's just me). I know it's blasphemy around these parts, but Reina's probably the only one I'd swap him out for w/o blinking. Used to feel same about Cech but he's slipped a bit IMO, Ed VDS is old, who else is CLEARLY hands down no questions asked better? Not saying he's 2nd best, just don't the clear better options. Plus he's a good dude, not a headcase, seems to genuinely love the club. I don't know, what else do you want really?

Plus there's something about him which makes me believe there could be a higher ceiling than you think. Considering he's 30-ish & keepers around the world are typically prime around 35, combined w/ his athleticism/raw talent & instincts....& finally the "Yank" learning factor. I always try to remind folks overseas how different it is to grow up as a "soccer" player in the states. W/ the exception of children of immigrants & the like, the game just isn't inherent to us. There isn't that natural understanding or gut feeling over here. Everywhere else kids are playing out of the womb. It's getting better, but still LONG way to go. That's why I think our players in Europe tend to be at best a few years behind the curve compared to their teammates--but on the flip side may have some unexpected upside, all else equal. Even at mid 20's some of our guys probably "feel" like academy products from a learning curve standpoint. But once we put our mind to it we generally find a way to figure it out, no secret there. And I think smart European coaches are starting to better understand this & adjust accordingly. Hey, I may need to coach these guys a little more, but w/ some patience I can find some decent value over there.

Meanwhile....I take it nobody else is confused as to the incentive for Mucha to sign pre-contract considering WC & freebie status? It just seems to me like, what's the worse that can happen....SOMEBODY will sign you on a free no matter, what's the rush? On the flip side, if you blow up this summer, who knows maybe you'll hit jackpot.

Other than the obvious fact that it's a glorious team w/ amazing fans & a top manager, of course!!(y)

Some good points you brought up there.

Personally for me, I don't think Moyes sees Howard being outed from the position any time soon but if Mucha performs to such a level that it's pushing Howard all the way then Everton will benefit.

Howard has the backing of most blues I know, he's got a solid all round game, produces some outstanding match winning saves and full on enjoys life at Everton. I rate him among one of the best in the league and you're right about the potential for him to get better as he still has time to peak, for a goalkeeper.

Obviously we'd all be a bit happier if he was kept company more full time from Donovan, as Im sure he would.

It's been interesting w/ LD. First, Yanks in general (even many Galaxy fans) generally actually hope he gets to go back. And no groundbreaking news but since he's returned, listening to him speak & give interviews, there are 2 very clear facts:

1. He loves Everton
2. He absolutely loves living in L.A.

On the L.A. thing, I can appreciate that. I work in advertising, love sports, moved to South Florida from NY after 9/11. There are some things about NY that simply can't be replaced (it's the advertising capital of the world, nobody is into their sports teams down here, etc.) but on the other hand, the quality of life in Florida is ridiculous. It's paradise, women are ridiculously hot, the whole state is one big beach, everything's clean, blah blah blah. It's a tradeoff.

So it's tough to call w/ LD. I also think he takes his role as a leader & figurehead for the sport in our country very seriously. He knows that there is a bigger picture down the road for U.S. soccer & I think he views it as an opportunity (& possibly responsibility) to help that process long term. So, for example, I don't think he'll publicly criticize MLS if they don't make it easy for him to move on. And I think even he himself is torn as to which would help the sport more--one of our best players flourishing overseas, increasing exposure, or staying home giving credibility & helping the domestic league grow.

In LD's case, I think at the end of the day he'd probably be ok w/ his life either way.

I know we're now way off topic, but pretty good interview from his L.A. crib (house), if hasn't already been posted:

To be fair L.A. isnt going anywhere but his career is getting shorter by the day, maybe the redies he could make in in the P.L. will get him a few new beach houses in Malibu, a gaff beside Beckhams and a special guest slot on 90210, i like his hunger and desire - he shattered my expectations in regard to his application, tenacity and drive which up untill his move to Everton were not inherent in his public profile certainly not his European one anyway. He would be a good addition for us - and i like the way he offers us balance. I think the option for Landon is wheather he wants to be good or great and a respect in Europe would aid that.

As regard to Howard im not a fan, its a position we could strengthen in IMO - i dont rate him in the top 10 keepers in the Prem tbh - im not slating him hes a good not a great keeper and when i look around other teams i see a lot of keepers i would prefer. I dont even think hes the Americas best keeper either.

Fair enough on Donovan, a bit overstated on the good/great if you ask me (& I personally would slot him in Melrose long before 90210) but off topic anyway.

Bit harsh on Timbito though. Not top half? As far as best American, who's better? Friedel retired from international duty years ago. Hahnemann has been very solid for Wolves this year IMO but I wouldn't go so far as to say he's clearly better than THow. Guzan is a talented youngster, showed some great flashes as Friedel's understudy at Villa & even as most recent #2 for USA (although many are clamoring for Hahnemann to replace him as backup) but hardly would warrant #1 status based on body of work. Kasey Keller is pretty old & while he's looked great during his current swan song at hometown Seattle, would be a stretch even if he came out of retirement. Count me as one who was a bit disappointed howard didn't get the nod in Germany 06. Not a knock on Keller, he's been great serviceman just had a feeling Howard would have been up for it. We have some promising youngsters & some other vets but none that warrant mention in this discussion. Timmay has been there & solid for the past 4 years (including the experience in S.A. Confed Cup which only helps IMO) & deserves the shot this summer.

But you made me want to take a deeper look at the others now. Can you really pick 10 better than TMoney below? Even if I'm playing Devil's Advocate & giving close calls to the "other guy", I still find it difficult & quite a reach to get past 8 or 9. Factor in the age of Friedel/VDS & the clear alternatives become even cloudier for me.

Simples!

Mucha is seen as a very good keeper, but I can only really see him improving our back up situation. No disrespect to the league he is [playing in, but its no Premier league. Think Moyes identified the back up option as a weaker area and wanted to improve it to increase the competition for places. Thought Ruddy was damn good myself but Moyes sees them in training so I trust his judgement.

Howards one of the best in the league, to replace him will need a discovery on the lines of Schmeicel!
