James Vaughan: A record?

Its a tough wrold and you have to earn your place. The standard he has to reach to start is the goals of Yak and Saha.

In fairness to both i thought they both looked dangerous today.

Not really a case of him starting games, just giving him more of a chance when he does come on. Getting 5 minutes here and there won't do him any good. It's no wonder he runs around like a headless chicken when he has such little time to make an impression.

The only place we can judge him on full games is in the reserves. Last year he scored 3 in 4 games, this year he's at 5 in 5. I appreciate that the reserves aren't a match for the first team but he can't really do much more.

i think moyes is just trying to keep vaughan fit work him hard in training use him in the reserves ill be very very susprise if he starts any first team matches this season

I agree with most of what has been said in this thread. I don't understand why Vaughan & Baines haven't had more playing time this season & if I was either of them I'd be asking questions about my future at the club.

Talking about Baines for a minute, it's great that we've got him, Lescott, Jagielka & Yobo fighting for 3 positions because it keeps those in the team on their toes & means we've got good replacements for players who are injured, suspended, tired or out of form. The thing is though, the defence has been really poor this season & Baines has barely had a sniff. I could understand if the defence was playing brilliantly & he wasn't in it, he'd have to wait for his chance but Lescott's been really struggling this season & still kept his place ahead of Baines. I don't understand why that is & if I was Baines I'd make sure I found out.

As for Vaughan, I rate him very highly. He’s not the finished article but no1 ever is at his age, least of all those who have missed as much football as he has. The thing is though, as an impact substitute he’s brilliant. Bring him off the bench for 20-30 minutes & for the rest of the game he’ll run his bollocks off, chase every ball & harass & bully defenders into mistakes. At West Brom we were struggling, barely creating any chances & the game was being played in our half. Vaughan came on & changed all that, he put their defence under pressure, they panicked, stopped comfortably knocking the ball between them & got pushed further & further back. That gave our midfielders room to get forward & won us the game.

There are times when the game goes stale & bringing Vaughan on would change that & I can’t for the life of me think why he doesn’t get on the pitch more than he does. The game yesterday was crying out for someone like Vaughan & all he got was 3 minutes, it’s wrong to expect him to come on & win a game in such a short amount of time yet it keeps happening.

I’m starting to wonder if Moyes just doesn’t rate him as highly as I do. When we’re not doing well I think of Vaughan as the player to come on & win us the match, maybe Moyes doesn’t think he’s capable of making such an impact. I saw Vaughan’s dad from afar after the game yesterday & I couldn’t help but wonder what he must be thinking. Our team was crying out for someone like his son for most of the 2nd half & he sat on the bench until there was only 3 minutes left. It’s not the 1st time it’s happened & I could forgive him for wondering if his lad was at the right club.

I hope I’m reading things wrong but I feel there is a very real chance of us losing Vaughan &/or Baines in the near future if they don’t get more time on the pitch & either would be a big loss because I rate them both highly.

Apologies for the length of this post

According to this mornings paper, Vaughany missed a sitter for England U-21s last night.

Good news that he got 86 mins under his belt, though - he needs full matches to play well.

There are real comparisons to be had with Agbonlahor. They're both similar players but Agbonlahor has now moved quite a way ahead of Vaughan and looked good last night for England. Whilst injuries have no doubt contributed to the difference in progress between the two, the number of games they've played has to be taken into account.

I thought Agbonlahor was average to be honest, he's a 100% player but he lacks the intelligence and movement to go with his devestating pace.

Vaughan is better but in terms of injuries he's behind him at the moment. Agbonlahor's basically been playing regularly for 2/3 years now whereas Vaughan has been in and out. Vaughan looked alot better in 06/07 when they where both coming through.

I can see why Moyes isn't playing him to be honest. Vaughan's game is all about powerful running, putting himself about and chasing lost causes. He's not at the fitness level to do that, he's having to hold himself back like he did for England under 21s.

He can only do it in short bursts which is why he's best off coming on for the last 20/30 minutes of games. He's already showed he can have an impact from games if given time. Lets hope Moyes gives him more than three minutes a game.

I thought that Vaughan and Moyesie had had words or something, which is why Vaughan gets bugger all playing time these days. But it seems pointless for the lad to sit on the bench forever so if I was him I'd get a transfer request in as soon as possible. And the same goes for Baines. Moyes clearly doesn't rate them as first team players.

I don't think that'll happen with Vaughan to be honest. He knows Moyes has stood by him through thick and thin as has the club. He learning his trade under two excellent centre forwards who he'll learn alot from. Maybe he'll get a loan move but I can't see him leaving.

I think Baines definatly will, he'll be gone in January. Him being sold will probably pay for Hunt or Elia.

You could be right, TB. But imagine if we bring in another forward (Love). That would put Vaughan behind him, Yak, Saha and Victor. That would be some way down the pecking order.

I personally would welcome him getting a loan to a low ranking PL team. The lad needs to be playing week-in, week-out for him to push on from where he was prior to being injured. At the moment he just seems to be in limbo, which must be a bad thing.

But Baines will certainly go.

That could the the case, I do think he'd benefit from a loan out. I hope Moyes doesn't go for Love though, we really don't need anymore strikers. Midfield is key for me.

Midfield is still disjointed, you're right. And surprisingly, seeing as we have lescott and Baines, left defence is looking pretty naff at the moment. The space left open down that side against Boro was a joke. Still, we know that Lescott can do the business there.

Agreed.
