2025/26 James Tarkowski

…..had another decent season although like a few others his form has fallen away a bit of late.

I do think his leadership qualities are underestimated and will be an issue as he’s phased out in the next 18 months or so (especially as Gueye will go also). Still something to offer but as with others, time marches on and it’s good to see transition already in place. More of a concern (for me) is Branthwaites fragility.

He has clearly been a good acquisition for us but I think he's been poor this season.

His lack of pace , concentration and wasteful in possession have cost us dearly and he's only going to get worse.

Keane isn't great but he's been better than Tarkowski this season.

People say .."Agh but Tarky would be better with Branthwaite alongside him".

Probably true but isn't that also true of Keane who has far better distribution.

The decision to retain Keane is limiting and typical of Moyes safety first and wanting ready made players rather than replacing Keane with a young defender and phasing Tarkowski out as well.

Ultimately we are stuck with both Keane and Tarkowski. With Branthwaite being permanently injured and Moyes refusal to move JoB from full back expect more crap defending like we saw yesterday.

A smart manager would have replaced Keane with a quicker ,younger CH and signed a right back to move JOB to his correct position.

But that isn't Moyes.

Very appreciative for his ample contributions to the club and the goal was slick , although this season his defensive lapses have become prevalent on a regular basis , he was lacking sharpness early on in the season, when he was paired with Branthwaite it seemed to alleviate some of past sloppiness but the final stretch of season partnered with Keane he his starting to show frailties at the back again, I think a plan for next season to phase him out as a starter should be implemented

I think the likes of Branthwaite & Garner have or are starting to show those sort of qualities and can take that mantle on.

He's a big big lad too, even with basically 0% body fat, he is probably around 15 stone i reckon, thats got to be a good amount to carry around the pitch.

Its a similar decline to Ashley Williams, and both players were of a similar build
Ashley Williams showed up to preseason with the physique of someone who's been on an all-inclusive boozy fortnight in torremelinos.

Is it worth a goal a game though because that's what he is costing us at the moment

….i do think posters understandably look for scapegoats during a run of poor results but I think over the season Tarkowski has been ok. Ndiaye has cost us of late but over the season he’s another who’s been decent.

We’ve seen the best of Tarkowski but he still has something to offer even if time is catching up and he’s in the last phase of his career.

I can't agree. He started the season very poorly and has made big mistake in most games, some have been punished, some haven't. He's put in less than a handful of good performances. And that's ignoring the fact that his lack of pace means we defend deep and the fact he plays hoof ball.
