Anyone else reckon he'd make a good 'impact sub' in games where we're struggling to break a stubborn defence down? you'd imagine that oppo players would see him taking the pitch from minute 70-75 and automatically give him a yard. An actual 'plan B' for once.

Unfortunately because of our previous mistakes we cannot afford a luxury player like James (well, that's the club's thinking, and that is helped by the fact James is probably more than happy to go too).

However, in my mind, there is no way on earth our squad is stronger without James in it. And if he is there to play 25 games, and play them well, and be in an actual SQUAD (which our fans still can't get their head around), then he absolutely should be kept.

That would mean doing the hard job of selling a 21-year-old Italy international with a good goalscoring record, shifting Gomes and shifting Delph, who all offer nothing to the side and could fetch us a sizeable chunk of money and clear £300k weekly wages.

But, that's too hard to manage.

We'll see, they're good journos. Reckon they get a lot of info from the club side but there's also clearly a lot of agents they talk to to at the Athletic (for every club that seems to be where most of their stories are sourced, which is common tbf).

Just like how his wages have conveniently gone up circa £50-80k in the last two weeks, whereas they and other places were reporting £120-150k last year, it does feel like a concerted effort from the club to explain why he needs to be moved on if poss. But yes, it still gripes, because people then say 'well we need to do it', but that excuses the reasons why we need to do it - because we've been dreadfully run.

Hes said he wants to leave. "I came because of Ancelotti only and now he's gone " when asked a question about is he leaving. People are so desperate for him to stay they are saying 'what does he mean!! Why is he being cryptic'. He's going. He didn't say i am going in clear English. When you say 'I came cause the manger but now he is gone' to a question about are you staying. That unequivocally means. I am leaving. No need to hire a professor of poetry.

My only issue with keeping him is how arsed he will be?
He missed plenty of games last season and now - He’s a year older, has a manager he has a frosty relationship with at best, we are an undisputed mid table outfit, and there is no Copa at the end of it. (World Cup not til December ‘22.)
I can’t see him pulling up any trees tbh.

I’d rather keep him than not though, given our lack of quality.

Just so daft how Everton always have to be one extreme to the other. I don't think there's any countenance to actively been happy to allowing a player of such quality leave. It doesn't mean a system has to be built around them.

Better management last season would have seen Everton make the most of the moments of magic James can provide. What's more frustrating is due to previous mistakes in recruitment, we're having to look to clear James' wages to improve areas which should have been improved years ago.

Benitez for you isn't it, he has a set idea of what a midfielder does and I doubt James fits it. It's mad really but inevitable also I think he wants out anyway. Agree its a symptom of our bad recruitment though...200k a week sitting on the bench isn't sustainable. Sad but there it is.

Yes but we aren't using our highest earner as a impact sub he either has to start or be sold.
