Sadly mate I think you’re right. I believe Benitez’ brief is steady the ship whilst we cut the wage bill. That doesn’t mean I think that Benitez will not try to get Europe, just that I believe he was told that there is little or no transfer budget, other than what is raised by sales and that anything from 12th upwards will be regarded, by the board, as acceptable.
Its so sad that. In fact, this could have been the agenda for the past 5 years, and instead of a Chelsea-style boom and bust , hire and fire approach, we could have built cleverly, with a lot of financial backing, and today we would be sitting higher up in the table, but with a sustainable, youthful squad. I thought that's the type of club we were, and it's incredible that we have overspent so badly.
Imagine if after Martinez we had invested in a young, dynamic coach + DOF with a 5 year plan, and bought 17- 20 year olds, combined with our older professionals, we would have built a team. The feel good bounce after 3 years with Martinez was lost (That year we finished 5th counted a lot for people with short -term Premier League era memories) and we had Lukaku, Stones & Barkley - it could have been done so carefully and in a sustained way. Just annoys me so much that we have spent so much with so little reward. Obviously Chelsea is spending millions each year on the best players and staff but they also seem to have an infrastructure that allows it. At our level, we need 5 year sustainable plans with incremental improvements. Then we can find ourselves in the Champions League, with more money, more profile and then start to spend bigger on players.
