Tbh I think the issue with James during the preseason, and at the moment, is motivation no fitness. I also think that Benitez is the one to blame for that as before his appointment James stated that he was staying and he wanted to work hard only for Benitez to arrive to tell him he wasn't on his plans and wouldn't count on him. When you don't have the managers confidence and you are told you will be sold then for players like James that need the full support of the manager then it is hard to find passion to play. But if he is not sold this season then him and Benitez better work things out for the good of the team because even if coming from the bench I think he could make a difference in some matches.

Our current manager won't use him much this season (rightly or wrongly), so it's in no one's interest for him to stay if he wants to play football.

I have major concerns about James lack of mobility and availability in this league. We certainly couldn't set up like we did on Saturday if he started because he can't take on defenders like Gray and he can't help out the full back like Townsend. And it's absolutely not a Benitez v James thing, because I'm not on either team! There's just a lot of romanticism in this thread because we have a player capable of moments of sheer brilliance. But in the round, I'm not sure he is what we need.
