Interesting here. If his words are to be taken literally, it appears that Koeman wants to rotate the midfielders whenever possible to keep them fresh. Ferguson used to rotate players in and out of the team when he coached United; Koeman might want something similar.
To be fair to the Dutchman he has never at at anytime suggested anything other than McCarthy is a player he wants to keep. If others wish to see in his words their own bias against McCarthy then that's their problem.

I was just curious as to whether he would get sufficient game time or not. It isn't the worst idea to rotate players in a position that you are strong in.

Koeman making it clear that if anyone breaks the Barry/Davies partnership it'll be Gana or Snides, but he's willing to let McCarthy have a bench warmer role in case anyone gets tired. Decided for 15mm pounds it wasn't worth getting rid of the last resort CM option as he's backed by Mosh's millions. Good decision.

That's a reading of Koemans comments that defies belief.

McCarthy has been crap since the day he signed his new deal at the start of last season btw, it's only in the last couple of appearances that we've seen a glimpse of the player he was when he first arrived, oddly that appears to have come just before the window opened. Strange that.

As he spent a great deal of time under a manager who believed players should concentrate on other aspects of football rather than fitness. He is probably the fittest he has been in a long time.

Pleased he is staying, fully expect him to challenge for defensive positions.

I am not surprised he stayed, he is very much a Koeman type player and offers cover in a couple of positions. If, and it's a big if, he stays fit, he is a very useful high tempo midfielder and a more than competent right wing back.
Competent right wing back. On the basis of two games. And was dragged off after 30mins of the 2nd game.

Can we add besic to the full/wing back cover, as he played right back in the semi final

As others have said, made no sense to sell him with the squad down to the utter bare bones. Barry will be phased out next season so if we make Europe James could be a good rotation option. Can cover wing back too although not sure that's a great option long term. Will do us this season tho.
