Would mean we would have hardly spent anything again.

I want us to spend as much as the next man does mate but it doesn't matter if we are raking in the cash on players who aren't contributing. No point in keeping a player we can get 15-20m for, for the sake of saying "at least we've had a positive spend this window".

we need players, hopefully we will get a couple in but I'm more than happy to be getting rid of players at the same time who have done the square route of sod all and getting cash for them is a bonus

I don't hold with the school of thought which says we are playing a financial game with McCarthy. I think we want to keep him, if we keep a £16 million player he has to play.
It may be because we think the money is no good to us at the moment because it is so late in the window and that Newcastle will come back in the summer with an increased offer as they strengthen for a Premier League season.

Obviously nobody knows for sure but he does feel a bit of an odd man out.

As I've said, I'd keep him, but he's not going to get as much game time as he perhaps wants or needs so may want the move himself.

I dont know why. He's played when fit.

He is worth more to us in the squad than £16M, £20M-£25M and we might be able to afford to replace him with someone as good/better

I hope he lad stays. He has a streak of utter gobshite and nastiness that not only do we lack but is important in winning teams. However I do wonder if he pushed for a move if we would let him go? It would be the decent thing to do?

Well I doubt his international place depends on it. The RoI are chronic in that CM area and he's been injured and out of Everton's team and still picked by them. That would be the only motive McCarthy would have to leave unless it was to a club of similar stature to Everton.
