What happens is Everton have the player declared fit, but not match fit, so we leave them out until we feel they are ready to play without a injury being picked up. The national teams then call them up where the national doctor can look over the player to see if he is as injured as the club in question states. If he is then they send them home.

If there is a chance to play then they will play the player for 90 minutes and then send them back home to leave the club to deal with any potential injuries (maybe a re-occurring one), I think something happened like this with Gibson.
