James McCarthy

Isnt his skill what he does off the ball? He does a fair amount of marking in the middle closing down the top of the box to the midline. I feel like watching him cut off a passing lane is something many miss during a game. If you base his game on the number of tackles or the number of decisive passes forward, yea he is poor. I think it is the intangibles that we as fans are mostly missing.

I dont think he is the worlds greatest at his position but I am not entirely sure he is deserving of the negative words above.

ive said it for a long time, his first season he became very popular with the fans and was very good, and for that reason a lot of us refuse to realise that he isn't actually as good as we first thought, he rarely passes forward and offers very little going forward, which wouldn't be a problem if he was intercepting passes, making tackles and doing an top job as a defensive midfielder. Hes been average this year and didnt have a particularly good season last year, hes not as good as everybody thinks he is.

Says a lot about McCarthy's fall from grace that his thread is back on page 5.

Like many others, absolutely adored the guy after his first season. Far from kicking on and being a box to box like many thought he could be, I think the last 18 month have finally shown that he just doesn't offer a lot on the pitch. Kante is showing how it should be done.

We need to rebuild our centre midfield in the summer. Besic in one spot, and two new centre mids at least to compete for the other, alongside Barry who probably has a season left but not as a starter.

Barry and McCarthy was great nearly 3 years ago. Need to start afresh now.

a mate sent me this off a west ham forum . (no love lost for james! they really dont like him do they haha)

Ok, here's a new one.

England are 1-0 up to Ireland in the 91st minute of the Euro 2016 final. A defensive header sets James McCarthy free. He's tearing up the pitch, beats Jagielka for pace and only has Hart to beat.

The only thing that can stop him is a desperate two-legged ankle breaker from Jags that would put him out for the entire next season, cause locusts and blood to pour from the sky across Europe, and ISIS to instantly lay waste to England. The question is...

Do you take a selfie as they stretcher him off the field, or just jog back to the dressing room to leave the medical staff to get him to the hospital in peace?

He's a workhorse and nothing more - his passing and goal return are not that of a top midfield player. Against the better teams endeavour alone is not enough

He's a defensive midfielder. Name a defensive midfielder who has an impressive goal return? Roy Keane is the best I can think of which was about 6 goals in one season. He mostly got about 2 a season though. Keane was arguably the best defensive midfielder of the Premier League era and I don't think anyone is claiming McCarthy is going to be that good.

Makelele - Most goals in one season - 1

Current players:

Kante - Goals this season - 1
Coquelin - Goals this season - 0
Fernandinho - Goals this season - 2
Dier - Goals this season - 3

Don't mind criticisms of McCarthy, but the goal scoring one is pointless.

Besic is one spot on what evidence had about 3 good games?? barry has been better albeit to old need a new cm i agree but mccarthy cant fall from grace this bad id hope he can recapture his form!

I think if we had a "proper midfield" then hed be a brilliant player for us.

Look at United before, they had Roy Keane in there who was a dead cert to start every game...midfield general.

What we have currently is Barkley at ACM. Then we have 2 positions in the centre behind him.

We either need a playmaker + destroyer OR a box to box midfielder and a destroyer....what we dont need are two defensive midfielders.

Now, either Besic is that Box to box player and McCarthy is the destroyer OR we need to sign a playmaker and have Besic as the DM.

Having Barry there nullifies the centre really as it takes 2 men to do one job.

Either McCarthy plays there as the sole DM from next season or he becomes our Nicky Butt.

Hes supposed to be our 'proper' midfielder

And Barrys been our best player with Rom, hes not the problem, Mccarthys just overrated

I think we can now safely chalk McCarthy up as (yet another) of El Fraudo's poor signings, alongside Kone, Cleverley, Naisse, Alcaraz, Robles and Funes Mori.

It's a roll call of dishonour now.

I'm asuming Jags would just let him go, knowing he would turn round when he got to the edge of box and knock it back to Coleman on the half way line. Disaster averted.

:coffee:

Robles is quite possibly our best keeper since big nev and Mori is our best CB and statistically our 3rd best player this year

Kone is the black Jesus
