James McCarthy

He's a regular pundit for RTE's football coverage, and possibly our most famous. He's made a career out of saying controversial things, and was probably the last man to admit that Cristiano Ronaldo is a good player after years of calling him an overrated showpony.

Haha! He sounds worse than Townsend!

I have a soft spot for Eamo, it makes our coverage a bit more interesting. He used to have a lot of run-ins with Liam Brady, but he sort of reserves his bitterness for our younger panel members like Cunningham or Sadler these days. It used to be a great panel, until Giles started going slightly senile and decaying in his suit.

Also, he ghost-wrote Roy Keane's first book, the one that almost landed him in trouble with the Haaland comment. Keane and Dunphy had a massive falling out not long thereafter, which noticeably galls Eamon to this day.

Ireland midfielder james McCarthy is a vastly-overrated footballer, according to RTÉ pundit Eamon Dunphy.

The Everton man started alongside Glenn Whelan with Wes Hoolahan supporting lone striker Robbie Keane in last night’s 1-1 Euro 2016 qualifier at home to Poland.

And while Dunphy was full of praise for Hoolahan, he slated the ability of McCarthy and Whelan before claiming that Hull City’s Stephen Quinnshould have been in the team.

“Whelan can’t play at all,” Dunphy said on 2FM Game On tonight. ”He doesn’t tackle, he doesn’t get on the ball, he can’t run and I don’t know why he is playing for Stoke or Ireland.

“McCarthy is turning out to be a terrible flop. He doesn’t do anything. He could be a holding player perhaps doing what Whelan is supposed to be doing. I don’t agree that he is a different player for Everton, I just think he has better players around him.

“But still doesn’t really move the ball forward and he never changes the tempo of the game, which is the key.

He is overrated. Jamie Carragher said last week that if there was one player he could take for Liverpool it would be McCarthy. He said the only thing missing from his game is goals. That is nonsense.
“He is a hyped player and everyone thinks he is far better than he is. We’ve haven’t got time to waste with Whelan and McCarthy.

“We have Stephen Quinn, who is a good, young, busy player who is always looking to do something in the game. He should have started last night.”

"He never changes the tempo of a game."

That's not his game, though. He's there to strip the ball away and keep the ball rolling toward his team mates. In fact, dont know why Dunphy doesn't see this. Teams in his own era had those types of players: keep it simple and keep the game flowing in the direction of your own team's talent.

His main complaint should be that Ireland play two holding CMs. Which is probably legitimate, as it is a legitimate complaint with us.

I haven't been that impressed with McCarthy in all honesty. Yes he is a terrier in midfield and can win the ball and just simply give it to someone else. I do expect a bit more in his passing range and driving forward. The way I look at it is couldn't we simply put a defender in his position to do the same job. He needs to expand his game IMO

I rate Dunphy as a pundit and the English stations punditry are not a patch on Irelands. Say it like it is all the time (very amusing!!). Not always right and I dont agree with Dunphy on this one. I did say McCarthy doesnt play like he does for Everton when hes playing for Ireland. But this is more than to what they are been told on the training ground by Martin o'neil & his team I believe. Ireland dont know what way they should be playing (football or long balls ) and this is clear when looking at the players!!! McCarthy plays for Everton and knows his role and what he is required to do for the team. Unless you watch him playing for Everton in every game (which Dunphy doesnt) youl base your opinion off his Ireland games and he looks average.
Either way McCarthy is top notch and with a better manager at International level hed by the exact same player

Think he's just bitter, cause the whole of Britain is off on their Jollies next summer to the Euro's whilst Ireland have to sit at home lol

I like the RTE panel too as they do call it as they see it but Dunphy has his own agendas which he has to get across, i knew he was going to be spouting about holohan after the game as he's been calling for his inclusion now for god knows how long, holohan did well but lost the ball a few times, mccarthy and whelan didn't..........there's the difference i suppose...........as for quinn to be playing ahead of McCarthy, that's barely worth responding too.............I thought McCarthy linked the midfield very well on sunday, especially in the second half

This season has been so terribly dire,
Not even McCarthy can escape our ire,
He's done much to carry,
A terrible Barry,
Who must have Robbie's wife over a fire

Imagine being told you're rubbish by a bloke who never played at any level higher than the old Second Division. Almost as funny as the idea that for a few months Phil Neville coached Juan Mata and RVP.

I know must have been a shock for Mata to go from being coached by ex-translator with no football playing experience to a multi title winning, 50 cap international with 500 top flight games under his belt.

Imagine if Chelsea/Arsenal/Liverpool were managed by someone who had never even played the game.
