James McCarthy

I'm not quite sure how you reached that assessment on his quality mate. He is one of the few players in our team who has won a domestic medal and did so in adverse circumstances given the team he was playing for. He was also a part of the Everton team who scored a record Premier league points total and was one of the most pivotal players in that side. Im not sure our position is one where we can discard so easily players of that caliber.

The lad has horrible luck with injuries, but we are not innocent in that cocktail either, playing him when he clearly wasn't fit. Thus was his importance to the side at a point. The question is can he regain his fitness. Based on his performances when he returned last year, i think he can. If we were to sell him, now is the worst time to actually do that and poor judgement.

I dont actually class, McCarthy as a defensive midfield player the way i would look at Gueye as an anchor, he is box to box a true no 8, engine legs, and a good skill set offensively and defensively with a decent appreciation of holding possession, driving, increasing the tempo and pressing. We have midfilders who can do bits of the afore mentioned and in areas of that skill set better then McCarthy but not with the same range of all.

I think you are being idealistic to be honest mate and no offence intended, football is a balanced game, you need to earn the right to get and hold possession, win battles and impose yourself before you can look at creating, you need players with those skill sets and McCarthy is one. You will get no where playing two Gomes's or Artetas in central midfield. Its an area of the pitch that requires balance and you need to compensate for flair and creativity. For example you wouldnt play Gomes at 6 or Gana at 10.

How is it poor judgement to sell a player who is consistently injured ?

Hes a good player imo but whatever the circumstances hes had injuries for years and not played for us but gone off with ireland...

What a ridiculous thing to say. Barry had a decent range of passing and good vision, but he had lost a fair bit of pace by the time he came to us. He excelled partly because McCarthy was the energy in that midfield, winning the ball and giving Barry the space in which to do his thing.
It was because we had some energy in midfield that Roberto’s team could play some quick attacking football that first season. We have lost that energy and bite, and look how long it takes us to get from one end of the pitch to the other now compared to the sides above us in the table.
I suppose Bracewell only looked good because he had Peter Reid alongside him?
bracewell was made to look ten times better than he was by having Reidy next door, ditto with Reidy! It happens like that sometimes, a pairing just clicks! Did Baines ever look as good without Pienaar (or vice versa)? Barry undoubtedly made McCarthy look better, but James made Barry look better too. We cannot discard good players simply because they have picked up major (not repeated minor) injuries. If that were the case, we would never have had Reidy (or Andy Gray) in the first place. City would have binned Kompany ages ago etc. McCarthy is a very good player, if he is over his injuries, we would be foolish to let him go without giving him a run?

Bracewell was one of my favourite players, but he could pass. McCarthy isn't in the same league and to suggest he is is daft. He's ok, has done good qualities and some deficiencies. Not a player for a top end of the table club.

It’s always the same with him.

Gets injured-people forget about him-club announce he’s nearing return-“maybe he’ll be as good as he was 5 years ago”-gets injured.

Let it go.

Interested to see if he has anything left to offer, I think he can still be a very useful sqaud player if he stays fit.
Who knows he might stay fit as hes unlikely to break back into our starting 11.

I think he can be useful to bring on to help see out games, or a tactical option to change up games were getting overrun in midfield.
Also cover for gueye and a little competition to encourage gueye to not get complacent.

Wouldn't play him purely because I think he'll get injured. Need him not injured so he can be sold or something.
