James McCarthy

Played a few decent games for us, gave energy to the midfield and complemented the imperious Barry pretty well. I always felt like we lacked goal threat from midfield with that pairing, but would be interesting to see what a fit McCarthy could offer to this team given that there are goals from other areas now. Not bothered if he goes or stays. He will never be more than a squad player now I suspect.

Ages ago. McCarthy is done he should move on for his career.

This was a long time ago.

We’ve moved on and have better in Gana and Gomes.

But for how long? Gomes is a loanee and Gana is in demand. I hope we keep both, especially Gana. Like I say McCarthy I'm not bothered about.

McCarthy is the sort of player we should be keeping - especially if somehow we nick 7th and play Europa qualifying games in July. We will need a big squad with some experience. I agree he is not first choice but he is a useful player to have available.

We've been waiting four years now pal. He's not capable of staying injury-free. We are paying wages for a player who has missed over 100 games in his Everton career.

But that's point - he's rarely ever available. The bulk of his experience has been gained in the treatment room, or at home in a plaster cast.

Now that he's football-ready hopefully it puts him in the shop window for a transfer this summer. He's not good enough when fit anyway. Sell.
Agree 1000%. No future here for McCarthorse.

Sell him. One year left in his contract and is unavailable for like 3.5 years.

Picked ahead of Tom Davies today! Bizarre choice, unless Davies is injured???

Hopefully he can stay fit until the window & he’s willing to take a drop down to the championship, promoted club maybe.

Or, maybe Marco sees more in Jimmy Mac in training all week than he sees in Tom Davies?

Let's be serious for a second.

There are now two games left. With Wolves winning today they have opened up a four-point gap between us, so 7th place is now pretty unlikely. We're going to come 8th or 9th - probably 8th if you look at Watford and Leicester's remaining games. In this instance it makes sense for Davies to be given a rest so that he can have an injury-free summer. If our summer transfers go well, we might even see Davies made available for a loan (I doubt it) but it's also quite likely he will be a key part of the midfield rotation nest season.

McCarthy, on the other hand, is finished here. Silva is treading a fine line, trying to give McCarthy enough game time to put him in the shop window but not so much game time that he accidentally shatters his pelvis into a million pieces or somehow manages to knock his own head off in a freak accident taking a throw-in.

Hopefully McCarthy goes on to have a few productive seasons, possibly even in the Prem. But definitely not with us. He's been a very poor transfer, objectively speaking: at the time we picked him up, £13m was a fair chunk of cash. In return he has missed over one hundred games due to injury. He's spent over 700 days - TWO YEARS - in the treatment room, the hospital or rehab. Totally unacceptable for a professional athlete.

Looking at the current top seven teams in the Championship I would think that McCarthy would be of interest to whichever three teams eventually win promotion. I'd happily take £5m for him - not that we'd get that given he's got a year left under contract.
