James McCarthy

But you're being selective and you KNOW it. The two areas you point in Gueye's favour can be countered by McCarthy having a better record on 'clearances' and '50/50 balls won" and "blocked shots".

So you see, for my money when you add in positional sense and being able to front up danger and neutralise it by staying upright and shepherding danger away (non-statistical and more subjective) then McCarthy for me is the clearly better player. That is the deciding factor.

You responded to a post about interceptions and ball winning stats. I was simply citing those stats to show you that you were mistaken because you were. I’m not being selective, I couldn’t give a flip about any of these stats. You made the post. I have no problem if you think McCarthy is or was a better player, but your post was inaccurate.

.......some of the comments here are nuts.
The lad had his leg broken while literally stopping a goal, a most unlucky circumstance.

He is an ace player, just a shame that we never really see him play. When he was tackling and recovering the ball for us, our entire teams momentum was by far improved. I just think to moments like vs Arsenal around Christmas under Koeman where he put two or three tackles in and literally everyone around him lifted, and the crowd got involved.

Obviously the broken leg was just a freak injury but even before that his constant injury problems have meant he's too unreliable. He couldn't play more than 4-5 games in a row without having to go off injured. Apart from 13/14 season he's just been a squad filler.

Hopefully when he comes back playing probably October/November he can somehow get a bit of luck and avoid the constant hamstring/muscle injuries as he would be quite useful otherwise.

I will be amazed if he gets any game time, Gomez will be in before him. I can't even see him making the bench

Here we go again!!!!!

The annual "player with long term injury" can't come back quick enough because we really need him!

I remember everyone doing it with Bolasie despite him being poor before his injury

Funes mori shouts last season to come back in after being out for a yar

Critisism of Coleman now despite everyone desperate for him to be back when Kenny was filling in.

Its almost as if people expect long term injured players to come back better

When he came back last ear before the leg break he looked like a breath of fresh air. I for one think depending on how he is after this injury he should stay as he is defo better than what we have at the moment. You notice McCarthy in a game, I always get well into a game before snides gets a mention. He at the very least deserves a chance to prove himself.

Did he? I remember him being rubbish for about 2 games like.

Will be tough for him the way he plays, I’ll shudder when he goes in for his first full blooded tackle.
I’ve always liked him an thought he should play the holding role on his own.
Good luck to the lad.

The number of freak long term injuries we’ve had in the last 10 years is unbelievable!

It's often remarked players become better when they are out of the team.

That being said I do think McCarthy gives us certain things when at his best we lack. He has an energy and an intelligence of when to press, as well as being a bit of a leader who seems to enjoy raising his game against better opposition.

I'm not making the case he's Dave Watson or Brian Labone levels of leadership either, but we lack lads who are prepared to have a go when the going gets tough, I think McCarthy is good at that.

It`s not that mate, people forget how average they were and then convince themselves that they`re the answer to all our problems.

McCarthy is not the answer to anything I`m afraid.
