2025/26 James Garner

Give me this great list ahead of him here then..

Rice, Anderson, Wharton, Scott, Garner..

Who else do you class as better than that group..

Non-English players....LOADS better than him just in the prem, English only....yes he is in the top 5...that's why he is in the squad.

He is a good player, but lets not go over the top on him. He is having his best ever season, and is 25.

We were talking England, so you've lost me 🤷‍♂️

I honestly think this is our best crop of CMs for 20 years lol, since the days of Lampard/Gerrard/Scholes/Carrick, and the current ones can probably play together a lot better.

Who's been a better set of options than Rice/Anderson/Wharton/Garner?

While you may be correct...only 1 of those players plays in the Champions league, 2 of them are in relegation scraps and 1 is playing in the top 8 for the first time in his career.

If we add Alex Scott to that list, that's 4 out of the 5 players that have never ever played at the top level.

I do like them all, i'm just pointing out the lack of top level experience and proven quality at that level.

It's clear that Tuchel rates Garner. I think he's the backup to Rice and Anderson. The bonus about the friendlies was that it exposed Mainoo. Massively overrated basically because he plays for Utd. He's not a 6 and he's not good enough to be playing as an 8 for England. He was lazy, slow and positionally poor for the Japan goal (Palmer obviously as well) and his distribution was poor overall. It will be between Wharton and somehow Henderson for the final centre mid spot as Bellingham will go down as one of the 10s.

It's the curse of the shirt mate

Don't actually agree mate, I just think we fail because we are not good enough when it matters, and other Nations are just better.

People bang on about our so called "Golden generation" - It was way overrated...by us English...because other nations at that time, where also full of stars and legends of the game.

So your saying that Gerrard, Scholes, Lampard even Carrick, if they didn't have so much 'Club hatred' wouldn't have been the best centre around in that era.. That England squad wasn't a squad of players it was a squad of teams..
Players nowadays don't hold that kind of grudge, they adore each over now..

We always fail once the shirt goes on, whether that's management not being able to utilise the talent around them properly or playing big names rather than 'Form' players, something goes tits up.

look at the size of that squad this close to a Tournament, bloody joke..

You just need to look at the squads around the other nations, they was just better.

We way over-rate those players.

If you was to do all time Serie A, La Liga, Budasligue teams...none of these players get in....they dont even ALL get in the Prem one.

That's fair.

Anderson and Wharton will almost certainly be playing at the top level from next season onwards though, and they're only 23 and 22 respectively. The talent and technical quality is absolutely there.

(For what it's worth I rate Anderson much much higher than most people on this forum I think - I genuinely think he might be a top 10 CM in the world and people underrate him because he plays for Forest, same way other fans do the same thing with Pickford)

I agree, they may well could become top players, and I also really rate Anderson, he is very good now even.

Other top 16 teams holding / beating us comfortably at home.. no CF outside Kane. The mix up between Anderson and Cole before Japan ripped through us with a really clean, quick team goal.

All this points to a world cup to forget. But we should get out the group and with some luck might get us to the 16/ quarters.

Then other factors like, are we gelling, are we getting goals, is Bellingham not acting like a Pratt etc come into it.

I don't think we're close to France, Spain, Argentina... The levels of the likes of the US, Mexico at home, and. a Japan or Senegal etc might prove hardwork for this England squad in the heat.

But we don't know! And for as long as we're in it, we hope :) 👍

Surprised Phil McNulty on BBC didn't have Garner in his WC squad. I think he plays with waay more composure and commitment than what was on display on Tuesday.

Nah, I'm not implying anything in regards it's either Rice or Garner, One of the posters was claiming Rice is bang average in this Garner thread.
Rice is not bang average, he will be the first name on the Teamsheet along with Pickford and Kane..
He'll be the first name on the team sheet but he's always bang average for England and will get schooled by the first decent midfield he plays as per usual. He can only play in big spaces when the game is stretched because he's primarily an athlete. But English people love this type of midfielder which is why we never do anything in international football.
