2024/25 James Garner

Disgree with this. We dont need every player to be top class to reach the "top half".

We need a squad and players who are 6's and 7's each game have value.

If Garner is here for 5 years then im fine with that. If hes here as a squad player and someone like Armstrong is starting each game and an England player then we'll have done well.
I'm not saying we should sell him, I'm just saying he should be an option/back up rather than a starter if we are to progress.

He was better than gana but it was still a very nothing performance. The midfield was wide open whenever they broke and we never had any sort of control with the ball.
Radio comms picked out Enciso and Jack Clarke as having plenty of pace and that we struggled to catch them when they broke. Put the defence under pressure repeatedly.

Doesn't matter how many times I watch their 1st goal, I just can't get rid of that image of him standing there like an arrogant bellend doing nothing, then sticking out a token leg after realising he's just given Encisco the freedom of Goodison Park.

As Dyche says "small margins"

9 times out 10 he doesn't score from there. It was just a worldie strike.

Bigger issue on the 2nd goal and game management 2nd half.

Footballers of today's game will score from there 6 times out of 10 unchallenged, but 10 times out of 10 you have to close it down not pretend you're a cone.

Even some world class central midfielders get this kind of stick. It is not a glory position whatsoever. Either you are the flashy number 10 or the crunchy tackling defensive midfielder that gets stuck in. Box to box midfielders like Garner will be the first target every time.
Why do you think he's a box to box midfielder? I don't see that at all. He's a crab who runs around a bit and puts in a few decent tackles every other game.

He’s not box to box at all. He’s James McCarthy with better ball striking.
I reckon McCarthy was far better than Garner.

The only defense I would have of Garner is that he may have excelled more with the teammates McCarthy had when he was here and McCarthy probably would have been more exposed playing with this lot.

I think Garners limitations get exposed when he is in a midfield already lacking creativity. If Alcaraz gets a run of games I'd be expecting Garner to be more effective winning the ball back and giving it to the more attacking minded players like Alcaraz. But his attempts at closing down Enciso highlight even bigger weaknesses to his game than we realised.

If you're one for stats. in 3 seasons(not all full seasons tbf) he's got 1 goal and 3 assists. They are not great stats. He tends to look neat and tidy on the ball but without much product or penetration.
I suppose a polite opinion of him is he keeps it ticking over.

‘Box to box’ though….

Nah, he’s a decent ball winner who needs to improve a lot to really make it in this league.
