2023/24 James Garner

He was poor today, not through any fault of his own, rather it was the fault of Dyche and the people who think it's a good idea to play Gueye in central midfield and play Garner at either right midfield or right back. I don't care what England under 21s or @davek think, he is not a full back or a winger he is a midfielder and needs to be allowed to develop there. Gueye is a liability, get him out and let the much better player, Garner, have a chance to develop in that role.

Playing kids in many positions very rarely helps their development.
You're comparing chalk and cheese.

And it took Gueye a few games to get up to speed last season. He'll be fine.

This lad is being played out of position, so I can’t believe how much people on here are slagging him off.
He’s the only central midfielder we have with any composure on the ball, and a good range of passing. But he needs a good run of games in his rightful position.
Many Man Utd fans were gutted when he left, because they had heard good things about him for years in the youth teams.
He was excellent for Forest in their promotion season, and they would have bought him on a permanent deal, had they not spent most of their budget on Gibbs-White.

I get him not being a winger but I still think he needs to contribute more than what we saw today. I think Dyche's reluctance to put him in the middle of the park is based on Garner's inability to really impact a game. Doucoure is frustrating but he's always in and around the ball making a nuisance of himself.

Garner did himself no favours with his 1st half against Doncaster.

No Dave, both Gueye and Young are struggling, Garner is an average right sided player and a good central midfielder. I'm afraid Patterson Is probably in the side untill Coleman is fit, it's the left side that is more of a worry, Young is just not up to it any more and Mykolenko is a liability, as is Gueye, his distribution is awful.

Garner slots in at RB for me. Further up the pitch - no.

At this moment in time I dont see how he's better for us in MF. He's clearly the 4th best out of the 4 we have IMO.

Think the midfield is a still a hodgepodge that will work in games because of the athleticism.

Garner is a better footballer than Gana and Doucoure..but isn't a better goal threat or at winning the ball.

He's a better CM than Onana but doesn't have his presence or physicality.

He's a number 8 that links defence and midfield but doesn't have the threat or defensive capabilities compared to what we have.

That's a great summary. He's the nearly man of our midfield for the reasons you outline. Basically he's too good to be on our bench but not good enough to be in our MF.

It's a conundrum. My solution is to play him at RB. Anything outside that might need a different system. His performance at RWB against B'mouth last season suggests so.

I dont think he is much better than Patterson at right back. He is also far better in centre midfield than Gueye or Doucoure.

I think he's more solid and space aware than Patterson. He'd maybe not get up and down as much but he'd hand us better defensive shape.

With McNeil back there's a decision to be made.

However if McNeil or the midfield aren't tracking runners like the last few weeks...Garner at RB isn't improving much as a team

I don’t think so, the poor defensive shape is down to the tactics of Dyche, I don’t think that playing Garner at RB will do anything to change the shape defensively.
