Actually like us playing with 3 huge Cbs + natural left back. At times it looks awkward for him, but there's lots of advantages playing this way.

Sometimes playing with a short, less physical full back leaves you exposed at the back post.

Reminds me of when Chelsea had Ivanovich at RB, it was always so tough to break them down.
Richard Dunne at right back is an obvious comparison too.

Shouldn't really work but does somehow.

Both could play a bit of football that's the difference. You don't have to be short and nibble with pace. If you use your football brain and know your limitations you'll play anywhere. God he's a brick wall 😂😂

Not sure if its this lad or beto who's making Dyche look like a bigger tit.
All that crap from dyche about not ready.
brought in on his watch though, and not for a miniscule lay out.
Moyes has some history for working certain players in, and the fluidity of the side currently (because of the job working back by Lindstrom) means we have that extra man at the back to mop up. We don't have a terrible first eleven and a smattering of capability on the bench. They're playing with confidence now instead of grinding in games hoping for set pieces. It's like they've all shed a weight off their backs and have a bit of optimism. Some turn around for a previously monikered dour Davey...

Reminiscent of playing Lescott at left back at first.
Not that it changes the point but just because I’ve seen it said quite a lot in the last couple of weeks, Moyes didn’t play Lescott at left back at first. It wasn’t like a learning curve thing where he wasn’t trusted in the middle until he’d done his apprenticeship on the left, he played centre half for pretty much his entire first season, then moved to left back in his second season because we’d signed jagielka and baines got injured.

It ties in with another misremembering that gets mentioned a lot - that baines couldn’t get into the side at first. He did, he went straight in but then got injured, came straight back in and got injured again, and then couldn’t get his place back because lescott was doing so well.

So I just took a trip down memory lane in the Premier League website and you're right that Moyes did play Lescott in the middle. He was being subbed on to replace the aging Stubbs , who then got injured so he was starting with Yobo for a bit. He did really well and we beat Liverpool 3-0 with him in the middle with Yobo.

Then by week 10 Stubbs came back and he was put out to left back for the first time because the other choices were Gary Naysmith and an utterly finished Nuno Valente and Stubbs was a better player than either of them so Lescott was put out left. He spent time rotating between CB and LB throughout that season depending on who was available or trusted out of Stubbs, Weir, Yobo, Naysmith, and Valente.

But it isn't true to suggest he was played at LB because he wasn't trusted in the middle, it was because he was so much better than Naysmith or Valente that if Stubbs or Weir were available we'd rather move him out wide to keep them off of the pitch.
