If he could have got out without going awol though then he should have taken that route, maybe it wasn't open to him without having to return to action though and he didn't want to tempt fate.

The soldier: they usually get 18 months between tours and he was getting sent back after 9 months so took a bit of R&R he deemed owing to him and reflected a bit about what was going on. Sounds like he had his head screwed on.

It amazes me that there are people in this world who honestly think that evil doesn't exist and if per chance it did, it isn't their job (or anyone else's for that matter) to confront it.

Squadies get done by different laws. They get nicked on a night out, for eg, generally they get off and taken away by their MP's and dealt with in house.

Going AWOL is basically leaving your post, your men, and your squad and not fighting with them. Wasnt too long ago he'd have been shot.

Its the shithouse way to be fair. If he wanted to fight in a "justified" war he shouldnt have joined the army and worked for the council or something.

It is his war, due to the fact he joined the Army. The Army is given orders to deploy....you deploy. No questions asked. That is how the military works....it isn't Democratic organization.

If you let one person off for Unauthorized Absence (as it is known in the Navy, or across the military, it is Article 86 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice). You don't like the orders...then separate when your obligation is complete. You signed a contract and took an oath. Be a man and honor it.
