Poor in relation to what he's done in the past.

I rate Jags as a fella and a player too much to say that, by his standards, this season was anywhere near good enough.

Got to agree. Poor would be a generous assessment of the first few games this season, though tbf he wasn't alone. He improved a bit, got injured and we didn't really miss him. Obviously, pienaar and jelavic signed and the team as a whole have played much better since then so he may have looked better playing in a more confident team. He's an excellent defender but to be a top class international, you need more than just defensive ability. Johnny and Distin are better footballers.

I've not watched much of other teams this season, but I like the look of Cahill. I'd be amazed if one of terry or Ferdinand doesn't go, simply because of their experience. Baines has to go, along with Cole and lescott gives you the option of playing left back if needed. Richards, naughton and Johnson give decent options at right back.

Besiktas. But he's not gone under the radar, they have a few Portuguese players there, he will have been watched. He just hasn't done enough, apparently. It's a shame to hear about it really.

The only one of them I'd consider taking is Carroll (did I really just type that?!) Holt and crouch are also target man type forwards, I certainly wouldn't take both, and probably neither. I'm pleading ignorance on Hooper, Defoe has barely played this season. I guess it depends on how you want the team to play. Rooney is class, I'd choose one of sturridge or wellbeck, a bigger stronger forward, such as the geordie hippy, and then some quick manoeuvrable forwards of the ilk of oxlade chamberline and young (much as I hate him). I think that allows you to play in different ways as necessary. Forwards are a major weakness for England. I hope we choose some young players and accept that we are building.

Hooper scores for fun for Celtic and to my surprise (well according to the paper i read this morning) Defoe has scored 17 goals this season, haven't bothered my arse to check like but if thats true thats impressive for someone who apparently hasn't played much.

11 prem goals for Defoe is more than I thought, so a good shout on reflection. Hooper would be a massive gamble. I just hope we get a decent variety, including some fast, skilful forwards. We'll know soon enough.
