As I have already mentioned, I am selling loads of stuff my late father-in-law (Reg, God rest him) collected over seventy odd years, on eBay. There was a pile of programmes that hadn't sold and - en route to the karzy - I picked up a Welling United v Altrincham GM Conference programme from 1989 to read on the throne. Imagine my surprise when I saw an article by Jimmy Greaves inside and, more so, its subject matter. It seemed very relevant to this season if you substitute championship medal for top 4....

WHITESIDE LOOOKS ON THE RIGHT SIDE

"Norman Whiteside has upset his old team-mates and fans at Old Trafford by saying he believes he has more chance of winning a championship medal with Everton than Manchester United.

After the early shots of the season, Whiteside looks to me as if he could be on the right side.

I didn't fancy Everton's chances of making an impact this season and I was unimpressed with the summer signings of manager Colin Harvey. Mike Newell looked overpriced and it was being said that Whiteside seemed over the hill.

Newell is making all his critics, including me, eat our words. He has quickly struck up a winning partnership with that under-rated striker Graeme Sharp, and Pat Nevin is beginning to sparkle with that diamond-bright talent that we all know he possesses but was too often dulled in his first season at Goodison.

Whiteside was so handicapped by an achilles injury last season that many people in the game thought that he would never regain the power that made him such an outstanding prospect as a teenager with United and Northern Ireland. But he galloped through his early matches for Everton with his old drive and determination until he unluckily collected a hamstring injury during the 3-2 victory over his old United team-mates.

I still back Liverpool to win the championship, but Everton are in the mood to give them a tougher challenge than I - or they - anticipated.

The Everton-Liverpool derby at Goodison on September 23rd now carries special significance, and it could easily be that the winners emerge as the eventual champions...."

Although only Arsenal won as many home games us (14) that season, and only Southampton scored as many home goals (40), our away form let us down and we eventually finished 6th, so some things don't change. One thing will change, however; Liverpool will not end as champions!

Oh, and Manchester United? They finished 13th, one place above their own city rivals.
