I’m not being sarcastic here so I’m checking f if not misunderstood so to simplify it , Assad is pretty universally considered to be a bad guy though right ? That doesn’t feel controversial . It doesn’t make me a AQ fanboy if I think a bloke’s , whose wanted across the globe for multiple war crimes , regime is a bad one ?

I wouldn't say he's universally felt that way, certainly not in Shia communities who suffer persecution. Probably not by the victims of ISIS either.

To the British government he is. But then the British government would have you think Al Nusra front were the good guys?

Forgive me, I don't think members of the population belonging to that group are the good guys. Id say if you join a terrorist group, you sort of forego that right.

Ah the Guardian, and Sunni backed Al Jazeera. Definitely no bias in their reporting eh?

I think Assad is a bad guy. But Christ on a bike, the revisionism about the "moderate Muslims" opposition of Al Queda is embarrassing. They weren't moderates and would have been a lot worse than Assad. People seem to learn absolutely nothing.

Ah so Assad gets a free pass for systematically using chemical weapons on his own civilian population?

He’s a monster and he’s been supported and helped by Russia.

You can’t assume that Syria is black / white, good guy / bad guy. It was and is a complete mess with tons of baddies on all sides be they Shia, Sunni or Russian.

The only thing you can be certain of is the innocent civpop bore the brunt of it and suffered the most at the hands of Assad, Russia, Hezbollah and the various Sunni militias involved in the conflict.

I am old enough to remember when Bashar was feted by Blair and the UK media, breathless accounts of the charm and elegance of his British wife and so on.

In 1943, after 23 years under French rule, Lebanon gained independence. Its new leaders established the National Pact, which allocated government power among the major religious groups. This independent Lebanon became a global destination, earning the nickname 'Paris of the East' or, due to its ski resorts in the Mount Lebanon range, 'Switzerland of the East.'

In 1971, the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) moved its headquarters from Jordan to Lebanon. Hezbollah later emerged as a response to this, with Israel's crossborder interventions to combat the PLO further execerbating the situation. The presence of these armed Palestinians, especially the PLO, created conditions conducive to Hezbollah's rise. Other factors also played a role, including Israel's subsequent invasion and increasing Iranian support with its anti-Israel stance but tit was armed Palestinian threat that kicked things off. It could be said that without Israel, there would be no PLO, creating a 'chicken and egg' scenario.

Edit: Also worth noting that in July 1971, the PLO was expelled from Jordan following a Jordanian civil conflict known as Black September - Jordan kicking the PLO out.

From 1967 to 1970, the PLO engaged in a war of attrition with Israel while based in Jordan. During this period, Israel conducted raids on PLO camps, and the PLO responded with artillery attacks on Israel. The PLO moved the problem from Jordan to Lebanon.

“Created the conditions conducive to Hezbollah’s rise”?

That is like saying Gavrilo Princip created Nazism.

Oh mate I’m not suggesting that he isn’t a better option than AQ or ISIL but that’s a ridiculously low bar . I’m just suggesting he’s a ‘bad guy ‘ who’s done some pretty horrific things .

Or describing what happened.

Well it isn't though. It is saying this thing happened here and this thing happened there later therefore there is a causal link between the two, whilst ignoring all the abundant evidence saying that actually what happened is this.

To have a stance that Hezbollah exists for some other reason than the policies of the then Israeli government caused it to come into being is an odd one to take.

Apology accepted.

No he doesn't get a free pass. As I said he is awful.
