Mikkel is amazing, and it's pretty indicative of the quality of the midfield that Spain carries when he isn't selected.

Xavi and Iniesta are the best Spanish midfielders of probably their generation.

Don't think i'll get a serious answer for this but when you say "great", are the ronaldos messis rooneys ibra agueros, r to name a few considered great?
Because if so, then sorry, he's just a really good player but greatness consists of it's own class. if that makes sense

Oh and did I mention that it's an absolute crime that he's never had a look in with the Spanish National Squad.

I really question their national team setup, or at least who makes the decisions (Aragones? What a numpty.)

If he would have pushed a move to say Arsenal 3-4 years ago he'd be on the national squad. Of the big european clubs, players from a midsize club like ours just get overlooked no matter how good the player is.
