Stend

Player Valuation: £10m
As thread suggests really. Jones is a great aerial threat as it is but its not the first time Jagielka has been beat fairly easily in the air which has led to a goal. Demba Ba did it at home if i remember rightly.

It does seem to be one of his weaker attributes. Especially against the taller players. Is he really much shorter thsn these guys.

On another note thought Distin was great yesterday.

I've always thought of Jagielka as a decent header of the ball, but he's not the tallest of CB's, he's 6 foot isn't he? I think that's why the Heitinga/Jagielka partnership never really got going, because of the lack of height between them. Distin is very handy for dealing with the likes of Jones/Holt/Graham I.E. big lumpy carthorses.

He's not able to win headers against the likes of Jones but he could probably have put in a more robust challenge. Saying that he was so far out and the ball came from the half-way line that he probably thought he couldn't score from there. just look at the players staring at Howard as the ball nestles in the net. they can't believe he let it in.
I remember the Rat saying the only way somebody scored from distance against Nev was if it got a deflection so they used to let opponents shoot safe in the knowledge that it would take a wonder strike to score. unfortunately we don't have that luxury now.

Yep he was like a statue, blame Howard all day long, but Jags never even put in a challenge for the goal.

could not believe the total lack of effort from Jags to counter the areal ball - dont think his feet ever left the ground - Howard made a sad attempt to stop the ball but maybe he was as shocked as we were at Jags's failure to go for the ball

No.

He should've won it but Jones will out jump most centre backs this season and it would have been nothing of note if Howard had actually tried to save it.

Grammar Nazis????

Jags isn't the tallest but he does OK - it is important to defend as a unit and we aren't doing that as well this season. Plus we have less protection from midfield and 2 very attacking full backs. He could have done beer for the goal yesterday but don't think it is a huge problem. Howard should have saved it anyway.

Thats why DM should have used duffy who is 6.5 inches tall & a good header of the ball perhaps in the 2nd half took Gibson off & put jags in front of the back four with Duffy & Distan dealing with the long high balls stoke used!
