Is it time for Technology?

That's probably more to do with the fact you don't live in Mexico.

I'm not bothered about England going out, but to not use TV replays is just embarrassing for the sport.

Yatzee!

Well apart from the bit about not being bothered about England going out.

Mike 'porky' Parry reckons the 4th official should run on with a screen on his back, for the ref to view the replay.

but then he reckons racehorses should have wingmirrors.

Maybe there going on about it in Mexico, but the players didn't have a clue about it until it was replayed on the screen.

Well their not part of football are they lad, so it doesn't matter if i have a fourth official or not.

Exactly, to me a ref isn't part of football so the game in a park with no ref is the same as a game in the world cup with a ref, two linesmen and a fourth official. It would also be the same if that ref had goal line tech and video replays to help him.

You're the one saying that introducing that would mean that it would be a different game. So presumably you're against fourth officials as well, as they don't exist in the non league games.

Well what do they do? They don't seem to do anything apart from time-keep and make managers stay behind the tecnical area.

Your going off on a tangent mate anyway with this ref thing (they are apart of football as anybody, but that is another topic). I just personally don't believe in technology for footy.

An example of a major change in football over the last 20-30 years for instance - the backpass rule. Ok it was a major change, it changed the game, but it was the same rule for the top down to the bottom. Video technology being brought in will only apply to the top clubs. Say it is brought into the Premier League, it won't be brought into the lower leagues, because they won't be able to afford it/maintain it. So with that in mind Man Utd draw Accy Stanley away in the FA Cup and Accy don't have the equipment, and Rooney scores a 'goal' but it is disallowed because the lino couldn't see if it crossed the line or not....

SAF then comes out and says; "In the Premier League, that would have been given, but becuase we're here it hasn't"

So not only do you alienate the lower leagues and create a bigger gap between the Prem and the football league, you take a part of the game away from the masses of people who play every week.

Hypothetical i know, but if it is brought in, these are things you have to consider might happen, not just a case of 'was it over the line or not'

Your argument is that all levels of football should have the same rules, which is fair enough. But I think bringing in technology isn't changing the rules. (And I think that's where they disagree.) It's just enforcing them better. A referee who doesn't make a mistake becasue he's very good at his job would give you the exact same calls as a less experienced ref using technology to help him.

Say you have the same situation with Stanley playing Man U and the ref brought in to do the game is from the lower leagues and he gets the decision worng. And afterwards Fergie says 'well a pro premier league ref would never have missed that call but because he's at a lower standard he has'. Isn't that exactly the same? Unless the same man does every game, there's always going to be a gap in refereeing standard.

Ok so you could argue there is a gap in refereeing standards, but if there is technology at the highest level of the game, and not in the Football league, isn't that creating a bigger gap between these clubs?

There is already an arugument saying the gap between the top and the bottom is too big and not good for football. At least if they all have refs with no technology, regardless of their standard, they are all playing by the same rules, bringing technology is changing the dynamics of the game between the biggest clubs and the smallest.

The gap in money and the gap in support are too big. Arguably the gap in quality is too big as well, in that it's hard to see a team like wimbledon coming from nowhere and shocking everyone again.

I'm just not convinced that a gap in refereeing standards matters. And that improving the refereeing standard at the top level but not at the lower level would make lower level football less attractive. (Also, to channel Chico for a second, your reaction to one person having a toy and another not, is to steal the existing toy so that they're equal rather than save up to buy a second one? That's the kind of thinking that brought about Stalin, you bad commy you.)

It's why I was making such a deal about refs not being part of the game. To me a gap in the standard of refs, is like a gap in the quality of burgers or the stadium seats. They all make life that bit more pleasant at the top level but they don't change the game into something else.

Like I said I honestly think two teams playing with one ref in a stadium with one stand and no burgers is the same as two teams playing in an all seater stadium with one ref, two linesmen, a fourth official, video technology and venison burgers cooked by Gordon Ramsey. The rules are the same and the tactics are the same, its just everythings a bit posher.
